Park City Mountain Delays Opening Day

Park City Mountain has postponed its November 21st opening due to a lack of early-season snow and warm temperatures, joining other Utah resorts in delaying the start of the winter season.

The anticipation for the 2025/2026 winter season in Utah just got a little longer. Park City Mountain Resort (PCMR) has announced a delay to its originally scheduled opening day of November 21st. This decision is a direct result of unseasonably warm temperatures and a disappointing lack of natural snowfall. Now, PCMR joins other Utah resorts, like Solitude and Brian Head, in pushing back the start of the shred.

Warm Spell Pushes Back Utah Openings—A Look at the New Dates and Chances for Snow

Warm Weather Wreaks Havoc on Snowmaking

Utah has experienced some strange weather patterns lately. While October brought record moisture, it arrived as rain, not the crucial cold-weather snow. Even more recently, November has not delivered the consistent freezing temperatures needed for effective snowmaking. This is a major setback. Resorts rely heavily on a strong snow base built by natural snow and snowmaking efforts to provide an epic early-season experience. Consequently, PCMR officials confirmed that Mother Nature decided we could all use just a little more suspense before dropping in.

Brian Head Resort and Solitude Mountain Resort were among the first to delay their planned openings earlier this month. Solitude, which was hoping to be the first in the state to spin lifts, has repeatedly tracked conditions, delaying its target date due to these marginal conditions. This situation shows how crucial early-season weather is. For riders hungry to start making turns, this statewide trend is frustrating.

The Patience of a Skier: What's Next for Park City?

The good news is that the PCMR team is working hard behind the scenes. Even as they wait for the perfect window for snowmaking, essential off-season improvements have been completed. For instance, a new ten-passenger Sunrise Gondola is set to debut at Canyons Village this season, which is designed to improve mountain access. Furthermore, the Pioneer lift, which was closed last season, is expected to be fully operational this year.

Although the official new opening date is yet to be determined, the resort is keeping a close eye on the forecast for that perfect snowmaking window. It's a reminder that even with modern snowmaking technology, the unpredictable nature of winter always keeps us on our toes.
