Mikaela Shiffrin is Second Skier to Win ESPY Award for Best Athlete

After a record breaking 14 wins this world cup season, Mikaela Shiffrin was awarded the ESPY for best female athlete at last week's awards.

During this monster of a season, Mikaela also eclipsed Ingemar Stenmark’s longstanding record for all time wins in the world cup, cementing her as the winningest ski racer in the World Cup’s history. A historical achievement that the world will not soon forget.

“Through failure and through success, it’s been a long journey, and it’s not over yet,” the 28-year-old said. “This season was absolutely incredible, and there was a lot of talk about records. It got me thinking, ‘Why is a record actually important?’ And I just feel like it’s not important to break records or reset records. It’s important to set the tone for the next generation to inspire them.”

The last skier to be awarded the ESPY for best athlete was Lindsey Vonn in 2010 and 2011.
