After a false start last weekend, Mammoth Mountain now says it will officially open for the season this Thursday, November 20.
The resort had been aiming to spin lifts over the weekend, but the storm that was supposed to push things over the edge proved underwhelming. Warm temps and lighter-than-expected snowfall meant Mammoth had to pump the brakes on opening day. While the east coast is firing on all cylinders, West coast skiers swallowed a big dose of copium.
Luckily, things are turning around quick for the Sierras. Since Sunday, Mammoth Mountain has clocked roughly two feet of new snow, finally giving crews enough coverage to get the season rolling. The forecast is calling for even more snow on Thursday and into Friday, which could make for a more than legit kickoff.
Mammoth Opening Day
Announcing the updated opening day on Instagram, Mammoth Mountain said:
“Thanks to the teamwork of Mother Nature and our snowmaking crews, these colder temps have enabled us to make substantial progress on our base. Stay tuned for a full operational plan over the next couple of days.”
For now, we wait on the full ops plan to see which lifts and runs will be on the menu. But after a warm start to November and a weekend of collective ski community pacing, it looks like winter is finally ready to show up in the Eastern Sierra.

With cold temps locked in and the first real base finally taking shape, Thursday should mark the beginning of another long, reliable Mammoth season. After all, Mammoth is one of those rare spots where seasons can reach deep into spring. Here's to hoping this year's no exception.
