Renowned Pipeline rider and lifeguard Tamayo Perry has been identified as the victim of a fatal shark attack on Oahu's East Side.

The attack took place at Goat Island, a surf zone located a few hundred yards offshore near Laie. Lifeguards were alerted to the incident shortly before 1 pm and recovered Tamayo's body during the response. A spokesperson told Hawaii News Now that the surfer might have suffered multiple bites and that it was most likely a tiger shark.

Tamayo, 49, was born and raised on Oahu and gained recognition for his exceptional deep tube-riding skills at the Pipeline, notably winning the Pipe Masters Trials in 1999. He also made a name for himself with impressive surfing at Teahupoo in Tahiti, where he traveled with his wife, Emilia, a talented bodyboarder. He also ran Oahu Surfing Experience, a surf school with Emilia and his friends.
