The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) is currently grappling with a high-stakes weather event that has local officials on high alert. Following a period of record-breaking snowfall, the likes of which haven't been seen since the mid-60s, the region is now being slammed by a massive atmospheric river. This rapid transition from deep cold to heavy rain and warm temperatures has created a recipe for widespread instability.

Double-Digit Avalanche Activity

Since the storm began, observers have recorded natural avalanches in the double digits. Known slide paths like Behrends Avenue and White Pass have already seen significant releases. Although cooling temperatures temporarily ‘locked up’ the snowpack, experts warn that incoming moisture will test the strength of weak layers.

For mountain communities, heavy snow is usually a cause for celebration. However, when that snow sits directly above urban infrastructure, the tone changes. CBJ issued an evacuation advisory in slide zones, with Centennial Hall serving as an emergency shelter for dozens of residents.

Looking Ahead

The hazard remains elevated as more rain is forecasted throughout the week. While some advisories for certain slide paths have been rescinded as of January 11, the Behrends path remains under a strict advisory. As we keep an eye on our friends in the North, it’s a stark reminder of the power of the mountains and the importance of respecting the forecast when the "special meter" is well into the red.
