Inside Skimo: The Newest and Most Demanding Winter Olympic Sport

Get ready for a new brand of intensity at the 2026 Winter Games. Ski mountaineering, or "skimo," is making its Olympic debut in Milan-Cortina, Italy. This addition to the winter sports lineup brings a unique blend of high-endurance climbing and technical downhill skiing, a combination that has deep roots in the European Alps and is now a rapidly growing sport worldwide.

Skimo demands a diverse skill set. Athletes begin by climbing on foot with their skis attached to a pack, then transition to skinning uphill using specialized, lightweight equipment and synthetic skins. At the summit, they rip the skins off, lock into their bindings, and descend at high speed through a technical course to the finish line. The sport is governed by the International Ski Mountaineering Federation (ISMF) and has been a fixture on the World Cup circuit for years.

The Olympic program for 2026 will feature two formats, both designed for maximum action: the Sprint and the Mixed Relay.

The Sprint The individual sprint is a short, explosive race. Athletes climb roughly 70 vertical meters (230 feet), navigate a boot-packing section, and then race down through a gated course. The entire event lasts about three minutes. Competition begins with three heats of six athletes, with the top finishers advancing to a final race for the medals.

The Mixed Relay The mixed relay takes the sprint format and adds a team element. A team of one man and one woman will compete in a tag-team style race that lasts around 30 minutes. Each athlete completes two laps of climbing and descending in a predetermined order: woman-man-woman-man. Teams will start together, and instead of a baton, skiers must physically touch their teammate to make the handoff. This format is a high-octane spectacle with multiple lead changes, making it a thrilling watch for spectators.

The skimo events for the 2026 Olympics will take place in Bormio, Italy, a location known for its steep terrain and demanding courses. This new discipline will add a raw, strategic, and culturally rich element to the Olympic stage, showcasing the true grit and versatility of mountain athletes.
