Hilaree Nelson and Jim Morrison Make First Descent of Lhotse Couloir

More news from the ski mountaineering world: skiers Hilaree Nelson and Jim Morrison completed the first descent of the Lhotse Couloir on Sunday. The duo, accompanied by longtime TGR cinematographers Dutch Simpson and Nick Kalisz, climbed and skied Lhotse, the world’s fourth highest peak at 27,940 feet, and descended the dream line in challenging conditions.

Hilaree Nelson is an extremely accomplished ski mountaineer who has a number of Himalayan peaks under her belt. She stood on top of Lhotse after linking it with neighboring Mt. Everest in 2012, skied off the summit of Cho Oyu, and was the first woman to ski off Makalu. She was voted Nat Geo Adventurer of the Year in 2018, replaced Conrad Anker as team captain of The North Face’s athlete team, and is the mother of two children in Colorado.

Jim Morrison has quietly been making a name as a ski mountaineer throughout his career, mostly skiing with Nelson and the likes of Adrian Ballinger and Emily Harrington. The California-based skier won Nat Geo Adventurer of the Year in 2018 alongside Nelson. He has a resume of huge peaks like Everest, Cho Oyu, and Denali.

We are waiting on more details once the crew returns to basecamp, and will update the story as it develops further.
