Go Skateboarding Day 2024

When is Go Skateboarding day?

June 21st

Today is Go Skateboarding Day, and fittingly, it's also the summer solstice—the longest day of the year.

On the longest day of the year, what could be more fitting than celebrating one of our passions? This is the rationale behind selecting the perfect date for Go Skateboarding Day. June 21 was chosen as Go Skateboarding Day because of the unpredictable weather in many parts of the United States throughout the year, making summer the most inclusive season for skating nationwide.

Indeed, the founding of Go Skateboarding Day was driven by the goal of promoting the accessibility of skateboarding to all.

History Lesson: The First Go Skateboarding Day

Recognizing the need to amplify skateboarding’s visibility, the International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC) launched Go Skateboarding Day in 2004. This initiative aims to promote events in major cities worldwide, making skateboarding more accessible and celebrated throughout.

Skaters never really needed a reason to hit the streets, but Go Skateboarding Day quickly became a cornerstone of global skate culture. Skate shops and brands like Emerica and éS spearheaded the movement, turning this day into a major celebration around the world.

Skate shops saw the opportunity to host events like barbecues, contests, team signings, and demos — activities that not only built community but also boosted local economies. Emerica kicked things off with "Wild in the Streets", a massive event that rallied hundreds of skaters to take over city streets every June 21, making skateboarding an undeniable force in urban landscapes.

Though Go Skateboarding Day has gone global, its heart remains in the local scenes. Since its inception in 2004, it’s continued to grow through a network of grassroots events, consistently making skateboarding more and more accessible and visible. A testament to the IASC goal of making skateboarding more accessible, today GSD is commonly referred to as International Skate Day. Skateparks from Tokyo to Australia, from Barcelona to Brazil, promote a host of Go Skateboarding Day activities.
