Ghanaian Surfing takes off

Ghanaian Surfing takes off

In 2017, man named Justice Kwofie founded the Obibini Surf Club along with his six brothers. The club quickly proved transformative, helping foster new relationships between Ghanaian women and the ocean. Historically, access to Ghanaian beaches was limited to working men, a consequence of local fears around drowning. Kwofie’s initiative challenged both the cultural fear of drowning and engaged local women with enjoy the ocean by offering them the opportunity to learn to surf. Filmmaker Benoit Lalande offers an inside look at the burgeoning surf culture in Ghana, paying particular attention to the growth of women's surfing as a marker of cultural change.
