How much can you cut off a Al pole?

Since I seem to only ask the JONGest of questions:

I can get my hands on a cheap pair of aluminum poles but they are way too long. I mean they're probably at least 10 inches too long.

I know you can pop the handle off and shorten poles, but what's the rule of thumb for how much can be chopped off?

I'm sure it doesn't fucking matter, but I reckon all the handles from a company are the same size, and I'm guessing all the poles come from the same billet. It stands to reason then that (without measuring), you'd have to cut down really close to the basket to have the handle not fit. But I thought I'd ask just in case someone has fucked around with this and screwed up a set of poles.

As long as the pole doesn't change diameter along its length, you could cut it wherever you want.

It’d probably be better to shim your bindings up 10” than risk ruining your poles....

OP, 10" might be pushing it. As a rule of thumb, never cut off more than 18% of the running length of the pole (between the basket and the base of the hilt). This is because during manufacturing, tensile strength is reinforced using a spiral fiber weave which actually becomes weaker the shorter the pole is, ok why are you still reading this.

I've heard that wearing bigger gloves will make the pole look smaller. Or something like that.

You got two options really, one is to remove the baskets. When you pole plant they will sink in 8 to 10 inches. Or option two: remove 10 inches from the middle of the pole. This way you don’t have to mess with the baskets or the grips.

They've got flames and airbrushed dragons. And before you ask, they are not for sale.

My gloves are pretty big. I'll just measure from the bottom instead of the top to correct for that.

    Finally, a simple answer.
