Would you prefer people ski around in the backseat and not use their poles correctly?

You've totally forgotten about the ski carve photos that usually involve some sort of a pole drag.

Maybe because that is how you typically make a slash turn in powder? I'm not sure what you are looking for. How would you prefer people pole plant in photos?

I ain't carrying poles around for fun. What are these guys supposed to be doing with them if they aren't reaching? OP confuses me.

more properly, you could be knocking the skiers in pics 2 and 3 for turning away from the camera.

The deeper the pow, the higher the poles need to be

For sure, that's how you ski, but you don't go down the mountain in a static position with your pole up and arm reaching across your body. Seems like every photographer is looking for that shot at the exact second the pole is fully extended. Just seems like a trend in photography everyone is copying and everybody is looking for skiers in that same position.
Somebody nailed it above... this photo has kind of taken the place of the carve photos that I don't see as much anymore.
No big deal homie. IDGAF, just making an observation.

Just speaking for myself, but I'm not looking for that exact second. I'm looking for the shot where the snow is optimally blowing up into the skier's face. It just so happens that occurs towards the end of the turn, where the skier will be preparing for the next turn by readying a pole plant. Unless they are a beater.
Here's an outstretched pole for you.
