Thanks for the recommendation. First I’ve ever seen of that nukeproof. I’ve looked a bit at the Trailcraft as well, though the price is just about double the nukeproof. Something to be said for a 20.4 lb bike in this side.

Yeah, I assumed you had heard of Trailcraft. Spendy for hardtails but you definitely get what you pay for.

Just pulled the trigger on the nukeproof. Couldn't help myself even though the vitus would have been totally adequate. My oldest probably could do justice to this build, but is definitely more of a me purchase for my younger guy. Maybe the bike makes him push the limit more

I mean I lost way more in the stock market last week on paper than the difference between the two bikes right

Your commission might get lost in the mail Dan

My oldest was much more aggressive at this age so I was willing to spend even more money but this guy aint to shabby either. My oldest jumped from a 20 incher to a 27.5 junior bike. The younger guy needs an intermediate bike b/w the two. these two are the current contenders.

See some stuff at 1k that's much better but would like to stay lower. I suppose resale is a factor but hasn’t worked out in past.

sorry for being late here, but I've been really happy with my kid's Sync'r 24. Pretty damn good spec for the price, I swear the hydros feel better than my tricked out xtr trails. The geo is a little more stretched out than his brother's Novara 24, despite being listed as the same size. This is a good thing as I think he'll get another 6m, year out of it.

It's still a bit too big for him to be comfortable on it, but his 9 year old brother, who is quite the ripper, highly approves after he took it out. With his brother's approval of course. checks all the boxes and am quite happy with the purchase.

It's what manitou does with the fork crown/arch. Not sure how much I buy into what they are claiming, but it's a real nice fork for junior riders for sure
Manitou suspension forks feature our patented Reverse Arch design. This not only sets us apart from the rest, but also incorporates several unique advantages: seal protection, ideal brake hose routing, and more compact and efficient use of material

Manitou uses a reverse arch. Looks a bit odd but I like it. Less mud and junk flung up by the tire packs onto the seals since the arch acts like a shield instead of a collector. They also claim it's lighter/stiffer: https://manitoumtb.com/wp-content/up...h_revC_web.pdf

It's also been a signature thing for them forever. They couldn't get rid of it even if they wanted to at this point. Manitou is about as likely to stop using a reverse arch as Shimano is to start using XD freehub drivers

Bumping. Could use a good 24" bike for the 8yo. Currently traveling and will be in Prescott, Phoenix, Moab and SLC in the next few weeks.

Looking for fully rigid or HT. Budget is about $500.

give me 2.5 years. Youngest (7) is still happy on the 20 incher.

finally got my oldest (9) out on his 27.5 but he'd likely fit real well on the 24.

If you're looking for a 24" bike...you must check out the Transition Ripcord. Buddy is selling the one his son shredded on for a bit...amazing bike.

Anybody selling any 20" MTBs? I'm having a hard time finding anything in stock anywhere! Bike supply chains are f'd and everyone is buying bikes like crazy.

I need two (7 year old twins....).

^^^Thanks for the recs on the Commencal and Nukeproof.

Found a Trek Roscoe 20" (8-speed, mechanical disc brakes, fat tires) at my LBS for a decent deal $400. I guess my budget is $300-500 for the other one, which I still need. If I can't find another at the LBS, I'll grab that Commencal Ramones.

ETA update: my usual LBS only had one 20", so I was still looking for a second. Ended up going home with two Specialized Riprock 20s. Never been a fan of Spec, but the bikes were under $500, good geometry, brake levers they could actually reach, halfway decent (mechanical) brakes, a coil fork (ha!), and 2.8" tires. Geo fits them so well. Just got back from a ride in the hood, and they were STOKED. So was I.

If the girls prove to be super into MTB, we'll do more legit bikes once they get up to 24-26" options.

The Rocky Mountain Reaper (posted below) looks like a sweet option at the next level, which you run with 24" or 26" wheels. https://www.bikes.com/en/bikes/reaper/2019

For others searching for 20" bikes in the future here are some resources:

Great summary of sweet front suspension MTB - mostly out of my price range/what I wanted to spend, but great to figure out price points and what to look for: https://thebikedads.com/20-front-suspension-bikes/

Not sure if you found a bike yet...I have a Reaper 24/26 I may end up selling...I'll attach a couple pictures and PM me if you are interested. These are ripper kids bikes (as you probably know).

I've had great experiences with the Scott Roxters. My daughter had the 20. Just sold it and upgraded to the 24. It handles well and is pretty light. We added a trigger shifter when she moved to the 24.

DTM or other kid bike experts, I have a 24" Diamondback Line that my kiddo is about to graduate to (got from a local mag last summer). I know it's a middle of the road bike so I was still considering getting a better bike, but finding one at a deal I can afford is unlikely, so wondering if there are upgrades to this one that will help my kiddo. For ex, the front end feels pretty heavy and the fork feels pretty stiff for a 60lb kid. But I only want to upgrade if it will truly help her riding, not upgrade just for upgrade's sake.

I know nothing about bike parts so probably couldn't do the install myself, but I have friends and a local pro mechanic I can call on, if the upgrade parts aren't that expensive.
