^ yeah I saw that, eek. this one wasn't wide enough yet to fall in, but if you dropped something in there you'd wish you hadn't...

Killing it ZZZ! Love the Doso Duyabi stoke! Any chance you got a look and maybe a pic at the Schell Creek Range while you were up there? The wife and I stopped over in Ely on a trip back from Mammoth over memorial day weekend, but the weather didn't really cooperate for a ski tour so we went on a cave tour instead. Highly recommend if you are in the area.

went skiing as well this morning. tried to link up with the mallwalker himself, but apparently the mall opens up way too early for me hahaha
Little chute skied nice at 830, I'm guessing its done in a week. Getting harder to find smooth snow.

I'd also like to take a moment to throw a big FU to UDOT. This shit is rediculous with the opening of the mirror lake highway. There is no reason they shouldn't plow it every year at the same time and have it opened by memorial day weekend. When colorado gets there numerious mountain passes open on a year that every drainage has multiple D4+ avalanches in it, and mirror lake which doesn't have one slide path that hits it remains closed. and utah has like 4 seasonally closed roads in the whole state. Total bullshit, all that snow is going to be suncupped by the time they get that road opened. And if you spent the last two weekends on Indy Pass outside of Aspen, Colorado, you would see what ski touring can do for a community. ...

WASATCH STOKE, CONDITIONS, OBSERVATIONS, AND ASSORTED DRIVAL 18-19
I only had my phone, so I've got a shot of it in the background but it's hard to see much. It looks plastered above 9500 feet or so though. I had tentatively planned to go back and ski North Schell and Moriah this weekend but had other stuff come up. Man, what a spring this has been, everything around looked about as phat as it gets, regardless of month.
And I can confirm that there is no sun cupping in GBNP yet:

I think you got it wrong bub. Let's stop naming peaks after white people that never even went there. Jeff Davis never set foot in Nevada. William McKinley never set foot in Alaska. These mountains already had been named by the native people.
I see what you're doing there and I like itLast edited by BRUTAH; 06-13-2019 at 11:56 AM.

Made me happy when I went. Not that I advocated for the name change but it's hard to argue that the native name White Mountain sounds worse than the name of some confederate cunt. At least the Shoshones had laid eyes on the peak and probably gone to the top...
Now to ski those NW shots in pow!

You're right, they plow to upper Lehman CG and close the road above that all winter. Even with a SNOTEL not far from the cirque it's super hard to time a trip out there as the wind obliterates the snowpack like nowhere else I've been...
When I was there in early May there was consistent snow within a half hour of the campground, I imagine in winter you'd be on skis the whole time. Looks like you can run up the shoulder of Doso Doyabi and probably do a couple runs without it being to big of a day!

got out friday. turns pretty solid all things considering.
got a message from a friend about a rail jam at brighton saturday? you had the 10yr old's attention at rails..
total blast. just watched and listened to some girls and guys just crushing it. a few of them just off the charts smooth...
regarding mirror lake highway, that shit is disappointing. july 4? like you said, the snow is pretty much already trashed. got a friend coming into town thursday and were hoping to camp in provo falls and ski out that way for a few days next week, but now trying to figure out alternatives ...Last edited by getoutside; 06-16-2019 at 02:02 AM.

Frank Dogg has been bothering me to go ski touring all winter as he loves cross country skiing, but I've been reluctant to take him due to his age and inexperience in the backcountry. With a summer snowpack in place it was finally Franks time to shine. I asked him where he wanted to go and he said he wanted to do an Ultra 5K+ Prominent Great Basin Peak! That's my boy, Frank!
We decided on Deseret Peak and at 430 am on saturday we left for the trailhead.
First, objective was the Temple Couloir, which is still filled in and skiing great for June!
The main vien went to the top but for some reason I went up the top right fork, which I think has a higher entrance, but who really cares?
Frank kept asking me to take his picture like a tourist. #kidsthesedays
After temple, we switched back over and headed for the twins. Looks like all the remaining skiers in the wasatch had the same idea.... How many skiers can you count in this photo?
More posing
Summit shot! Frank Dogg!
Scouting the line....
Frank Dogg sends!

Frank is shredding hard for an old guy and a first time BC skiing dog. That first day is bigger than most dogs/people will ever do!
It's so weird that Deseret gets gangbanged in June but your tracks can be the only ones for a week if you head up there in mid-winter. The road approach isn't that long by today's standards...

Oh Frank Dogg is just a pup, he just turned one a few weeks back. Just dont want to work him too hard.
And I don't find it surprising at all that more Wasatch skiers don't ski deseret in the winter. As I find that most Wasatch skiers don't travel very well. Shit, half of em won't even consider a tour of they can't make it home by noon
