I'm not so sure...surge pricing would reduce crowding. Personally: I would pay a bit more (especially in great conditions) for shorter lift lines and a less crowded mountain overall. If they raise the price and it is still overcrowded then they are not charging enough. If no one is there on a powder Tuesday in March then they need to lower prices.

See Tom gets it. It's all about maximizing revenue. Not really about skiing, if it ever was. This is America, if you are not maximizing profit at every opportunity, then you are some kind of socialist commie. (I'm still butt hurt by the solitude parking money grab. Fuckers.)

I can see a future where a season pass is simply discounted lift tickets on retainer. Buy a $1000 pass and you get $1000 worth of lift tickets based on 20% off window rate that day, that way theyd still be able to stick it to you with surge pricing.

the surge pricing seems like it wouldnt affect crowding on the 100% deep days, and would only deter folks on the 50-50 days. Overall, i would not be happy at all if this became widespread.

well, actually, it's Europe. I'm almost positive TicketCorner was the company through which we purchased our passes for last year's BBI Europe. It worked great there. All in pricing was very reasonable averaged across several days of skiing. One one Wednesday (? going off memory), lift passes were 10 swiss francs if bought the night prior. And yes, lift lines were short.

My point is this: It is a bit hypocritical to simultaneously complain about crowding while hoping that lift ticket prices do not increase. I am not accusing anyone here of this, but just trying to make the point. It is not about maximizing profit- it is about using a resource as efficiently as possible (snow/ski lift/mountain being the resource). If you don't pay more in dollars you will likely end up paying more in time waiting at the lift base.

Or is it about whether skiing becomes a sport like yacht racing or polo or whether it remains a sport somewhat attainable for average people (if not for average families). If you're of the Milton Friedman/the--only-thing-that-matters-is-profit school of economics then of course you adjust your pricing to maximize profit (which is what you mean by using a resource as efficiently as possible). But that school of economics is relatively recent in America--1970's if I recall correctly--and people are finally starting to understand the socioeconomic and political downsides of that way of thinking.

Anyway, this is all moot. Either AGW or the measures to mitigate it will kill the industry.

I need to go to Utah.
    Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?

So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

I am that old man...and I also yell at blackout dates.
It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.
