Ding ding ding.
Can’t tell you how many companies I’ve worked at where people with no “call offs” get awards.
Attendance bonuses etc.

Honestly, that's sort of a bummer. Esp in the COVID times. I wish you well in that setting.
Without getting to much into the detail, I work for a large multinational these days with quite a bit of European sensibilities and influences. All our offices are de-facto closed during the entire pandemic - huge workforce too. Now, our US presence doesn't reflect all the advantages as those granted to our Euro counterparts... but their influence shapes the baseline expectations for a workplace. So - there are positives there - I'd consider working for an entirely Euro-based company; in general, I think they offer more to their employees. Moot for me tho, I'm remote and winding down & out. I buried the lede here: based on what I've seen - Euro companies are taking better employee precautions during the pandemic than the US ones; where I work they are not fucking around.

In our district, if your kid takes a sick day for ANY reason they can not return excused without either a negative COVID test or a legit doctor's/dentist note saying they were out for something else not COVID related. saying they had a headache or anything is no longer excused without the test or a doc note.
Go that way really REALLY fast. If something gets in your way, TURN!

Kyrie Irving is the perfect anti-vaxxer. He's going to lose millions. He's also done his own research. These are the people we're dealing with.
""The whole intent behind it, Coach, it wasn't to bash science. It wasn't to like have the intent of starting a rage and be seen as this insane individual. When I started seeing comments and things about universal truths that I had known, like I had questions.
"When I started actually doing research on my own and figuring out that there is no real picture of Earth, not one real picture of Earth—and we haven't been back to the moon since 1961 or 1969—it becomes like conspiracy, too."
"Look, look. Here it is. All I want to do is be able to have that open conversation. It was all an exploitation tactic. It literally spun the world—your guy's world—it spun it into a frenzy and proved exactly what I thought it would do in terms of how all this works. It created a division, or, literally stand up there and let all these people throw tomatoes at me, or have somebody think I'm somehow a different intellectual person because I believe that the earth is flat and you think the world is round. It created exactly that.
"It became like, because I think different, does that knock my intellectual capacity or the fact that I can think different things than you? That was the intent behind it. Do your own research, don't come to me and ask me. At the end of the day, you're going to feel and believe the way you want to feel. But don't knock my life over that. When I do something, I know my intent. And it proved what I thought it would."Last edited by goldenboy; 10-14-2021 at 02:18 PM.

FDA panel recommending Moderna boosters--half dose by the way, which is still more than the Pfizer. FDA meeting soon and CDC next week. Same eligibility criteria as Pfizer--65+, high risk, or high exposure.

https://www.theatlantic.com/health/a...choice/620373/
Multi- cited -
'It's a call for a cultural change where instead of doing nothing symptomatic people take modest precautions against infecting others. Doing so could reduce mortality by 25, 50, even 75 percent, which translates to tens of thousands of lives saved. '
The AD,
"There's probably some of this, but I also think it's primarily driven by people who were brought up to believe missing work for being sick is a sign of weakness and that always showing up is the manly thing to do. "
what I found stunning was The Atlantic's claim that Influenza cost Business 87Billion in lost productivity -
in my culture and my generation and my ancestor's (generation), lost time meant lost productivity, and 'sick leave' was considered extra 'Vacation' -
I have seen 'sick leave' abused in this way ( as 'Vacation' ) ;
where I am trying to go with this post is to the idea of 'Paid sick leave ( /PTO)' and forms of government -
and while I believe Bunion's tongue is planted firmly in his cheek - for our generation, government employees got 'sick leave' and business employees used Vacation first, and then went unpaid for Work missed ;
'sick leave' was considered a 'Benefit' and ,,, largely scorned.
, , , there should be some balanced solution to this -
perhaps implemented over a period of Time;
as we get older, we recognize ((often, but not always) , that Time is more valuable than Money ) ;
would you take a week of Paid (Sick) Leave in lieu of the miniscule raise that is being offered over the next three years
( can young people even plan to stay with an employer for three consecutive years anymore ? ? )
then, after three years, one can either 'bank' Leave, or 'cash-out' unused Leave for (additional) Pay.
there are places where some variation of this is done --
I do think we need to be careful about comparing staff management, and Health management(,) with Government, Because
there are definitely people that believe allowing people 'paid time off ( Sick leave ) ' is contrary to their political beliefs. !
There was also a comment in the Atlantic column about vaccine technology improving the 'flu shot' in the near future ;
that would be Good, Because If you come from my background, everyone knows, the 'flu shot' doesn't work !

perhaps I presented or worded it badly - I was referring to Paid Time Off.
in the 'Right To Work' movement ( of State govenment ), an employee can claim Unpaid medical Leave ;
it is my understanding what was referenced in the Atlantic and by Multi- is the idea of Paid Sick Leave.
in the 'Right to Work' movement, PTO is not growing, it's disappearing.
skiJ
And
What I was trying to focus on was the idea(,) if it is Required by law, as Bunion referenced, there are those who will Be opposed, Because it conflicts with their political beliefs !
it requires a shift in the value(s) of a society.Last edited by skiJ; 10-14-2021 at 05:17 PM.

^^^ (The AD) It's funny but it's not. Kyrie isn't the only one that thinks the moon landing was fake and it's a conspiracy that we haven't been back (not because it's expensive and dangerous). But these are the same people that think covid and masks and vaccines are also conspiracies. It doesn't really matter if someone thinks the Earth is flat, I guess. But it definitely does when the same people "do their own research" with vaccines and masks and all that other crap.

no-sale, o_ng -
"sick leave / sick time" is not PTO in "Right to Work" States -
Paid Sick Leave was one of three foundational issues identified as potentially impacting management of Influenza.
my "formatting" may evolve -
I am sorry that you do not have the Patience, but I am trying to contribute to a discussion about Health - and a post ( and a series of posts ) that commented to the role of Government.
Unpaid "sick time" is not PTO -
with due respect. tj

I had a job from 2017-2019 where PTO and sick leave (40 hours/yr) were counted separately. It was a foreign owned company. I'm now working for arguably the best place to work, tops list almost every year. PTO and sick is the same bucket. But, there's something called critical time off and I got that paid from Dec 13th through the end of the month when wife got COVID bad. My manager totally hooked me up with that because she was cleared Dec 21st but I was then under stay home for 10 days after that, had it too. all the way to Jan 2nd paid and kept all my PTO.
But ya, 95% of the jobs either have nothing or PTO that gets used if you're sick. You can take unpaid family leave instead.
Sorry for the side rant..
How is this COVID related?? Think of all the fast food and grocery store workers who knew they probably had it but kept working anyway because a positive test means they sit home not getting paid while bills pile up. Even if it's just the flu, people need to be able to stay home paid when truly sick. This is why SEPERATE and fully paid sick leave is critical to public health safety...Go that way really REALLY fast. If something gets in your way, TURN!

I used to work under the sick leave = pto method. Then my state mandated sick leave as a requirement like minimum wage. We took a tiny step towards the rest of the developed world. We also got paternity/maternity leave. My bosses head about exploded when I took 3 months off and he couldn’t say anything.
Of course I’m going to minimize my sick leave if it is also my vacation time.
We both know we aren’t getting paid sick time in right to work states or at the federal level.
My point is that if you want sick leave and use of it to be widespread, then you need to mandate it at the state or federal level as a benefit separate from vacation leave.
I also don’t care about “abuse”. Don’t feel like getting out of bed on a Tuesday because you can’t face the world or are depressed? Sick as a dog with the flu? Don’t care. More than 3 days = doctors note.

Hauling carcus into a dr office for a note seems a bit much. Money out of pocket plus the hassle of going in - if you can even get an appt - all seems a bit punitive
