what's the matrix # listed on each side of the record in the runout? post up all the info in the deadwax and i'll tell you for sure what you've got.

is there a circular groove on the label about the size of a silver dollar (sort of hard to describe)?

is the cover thick or thin cardboard? is the vinyl flexible?

the earliest originals in the right condition go for up to $600+.

Yeah, Alternative Tentacles is great. However they aren't allowed to sell any Dead Kennedys stuff anymore (with the exception of the Nazi Punks single). Its bullshit, Biafra was the heart and soul of the band and the reincarnation of the Dead Kennedys goes against everything they were about. Very, very lame. I got all of the aforementioned Dead Kennedys albums on ebay.

ok.....so you're asking a bigger question than you might realize. the following is true for columbia jazz pressings from that mid-50s to 60s era.

what you've listed is the catalog # for side A & side B. XLP is, for columbia, a mono recording. the XSM prefix is generally stereo.

are you sure it's "-10" and not "-1D"? the number after the hyphen -- again, for columbia -- indicating which stamper it came from.

generally speaking, a lower stamper (1A) is earlier on in the run than 1B, 1C, 1AB, 1BC, 2J, etc. stampers have a certain lifespan, so while an earlier stamper was closer to the original, if you had the last record pressed from that stamper, it might sound worse than the first record pressed from a later stamper. also, while 1A is earlier than 1B, sometimes 1B was the first if 1A's stamper was tossed (manufacturing problem). it happens.

i'm not sure how to answer this. it can take a looong time to figure out what is a rare original vs a more common reissue (or even a less-rare 2nd issue).

you need to figure out the original recording date and appropriate cues from each label.

some generalities:
* pressings in the 50s & early 60s were generally on heavier, thicker (inflexible) vinyl;
* covers were usually thick cardboard;
* if it's sealed, it's generally a bad sign. many records were sold unsealed, and it was common for people to open a record in the store and preview it at a listening station.
* mono recordings were usually the first for any jazz on most labels, at least through the early 60s. early stereo recordings are usually poorly done; monos are more desirable.

an example of where this can get tough is for blue note records. the company changed their address multiple times in their history. you'd think you could use the address on the label as a cue, and it works sometimes...but then it turns out that they did not always release their titles in sequential order (by catalog #). also, the label was sold a few times. the owners were always cheap, so they reused whatever stock was on hand. thus you could get a more recent issue with an older remnant label, or vice versa.

there are lots of minor details that can set apart an album that is "worth" $5k vs. one worth $5, but that $5 one might fool a ton of people. if you watch ebay and know what you're looking for, you can see people overpaying for stuff all the time, thinking it's rare when it's not.

there's a ton of esoteric info. if you have specific label questions, i can probably help, but you kind of asked a "tell me everything about jazz on vinyl" question and there's stuff it's taken 10, 15 years to figure out, with mistakes along the way. things like artist (obviously), studio, label, time period, recording engineer, location where it was pressed, vinyl formulation, stamper, etc., etc. all come into play.

my advice? forget about all that and buy recordings you like regardless of the vintage. if you really like something, then do research on the pressings. you also need the equipment to preserve it and get the most/best sound out of it.

at this stage in the game, you are very unlikely to find true originals that are not priced that way.

many folks buy "expensive" albums for the collectability. i'm interested in the sound. first pressings are not always the best, but they are what "collectors" (which i am not...i'm a music-lover) invest in. they're not making any more of those originals.

Sometimes you have to pay to learn. Back in the day I would have paid $10-20 for a bootleg of Black Flag’s 1982 demo (with Chuck Biscuits on drums!) or Fugazi’s In of the Kill Taker demo (recorded by Steve Albini). Then again, I used to pay for pornography too.

i didn't know that. that'd be an interesting listen.

the ION USB turntable isn't so great so far. i tried using the EZ Vinyl converter on Sebadoh's Smash your head on the punk rock (green vinyl) and with the volume maxed out, you can hardly hear it.

it did come with audacity, so i'll see if that works any better.

Got my Radiohead ''In Rainbows'" vinyl/cd box in the mail yesterday and its stunning. Heavy-weight vinyl, 2 cds, artwork, comes with a book spine, tough cardboard sleeve, basically looks like a coffee table book....awesome.
