He and I hike Greylock every season (well - he hikes, I skin), and he's sick of lugging skis on his back on the way up, and snowshoes on the way down. There are a few shops that rent up in the Whites (my current stomping grounds), but that's a long drive for the old man. Any help finding something closer to his neck of the woods (Western Mass) would be much appreciated.
I would call Berkshire Outfitters and see if they have any recommendations.

Doesn’t Magic still have AT gear in their rental fleet? You have to use it at Magic, but that’s still a good option.

And a grand tour it was. Peruvian grinned through the thwack.

And found some snow to twist it out.

And non-mag Graeme found some room between the shrubs.

Got on the hill at 1:30 and had ski-on lifts all afternoon. Snow is holding up so well, even the slick spots are grippy.

Bucket was working with -9º and I woefully was looking at -22º on 16 between Gorham and Pinkham on Saturday at 7:30 am.

MNIAW and I were pleased when the sun breached the peak during the first part of our Avi course. We got aquatinted with our instructor Marc Chauvin and the other 3 in the class and spent two hours going over how beacons work, running some search drills ect. At least it was only -15º at Pinkham with no wind.

A soul warming skin to the Huntington Ravine fire road, throw some warm clothes on and an hour of lessons going over various search patterns. Unfortunately this was in the shade, still fucking cold.

A quick break to fuel, stash skis, and put on the micro spikes to head to the bowl. Dozens of people around, another 40-50 in various Avi 1 groups and many skiers.

Dug a pit in the shelter of some rocks and a rescue scenario as well, MNIAW are hopeful the pack we searched for survived.

Fun times for sure. It was damn cold but we had a good group and a good instructor that kept things light with the right level of seriousness.

Looks like a little clipper overnight. The 2-3" forecast will double the amount of snow at my stake.

Then the next rain storm is on the models for the coming weekend. Don't be fooled. Every storm that has been forecast to dump more than 4" of snow here has turned into a mixed mess that is more rain than snow.
It will probably result in the 3" inches we get tonight becoming nicely compacted into the rock hard base.

Aim for the chopping block. If you aim for the wood, you will have nothing. Aim past the wood, aim through the wood.

Is that Stratton? We were there yesterday and were lapping the nice soft bumps on the lookers left of the Sunrise lift i believe. The lift that goes half way up and you are almost in the bumps after a short spot. Great snow in there, but you had to watch the reeds poking through that would grab your skis if you got lazy with your turns. Sorry, i suck remembering trail names.

Yes it is, skiing is really good there right now and the lack of crowds on a Sunday afternoon was ideal.
