Thanks! I was living the good life (Dynafit system), but my buddy did the entire thing in regular alpine boots! We hiked up the broad shoulder of Dana, so no need for crampons, and we were able to skin for a while. But lots of booting on this day. I think he's convinced that he needs a touring boot.

Anybody have recent info on saddlebag lake road status, the campgrounds (walk-in or at end of the rd), and skeeter hatch? Thx!

I was there last Friday - road was open to the dam. Gated campgrounds were all closed .Tourist from CO so I'm not sure of the usual landmarks.

I skied out of saddlebag lake on Monday, Memorial Day. Still snow surrounding the parking lot at saddlebag lake with some floating ice in the lake itself. Sorry but not sure what skeeter hatch is.
At the time, Y on Conness skied very well. A couple of cooler / showery days and nights preceded memorial day, so it probably helped. I was surprised I encountered no suncups during the day anywhere. Makes me curious about the couloirs on North Peak. Had to step over a few rocks, but a continuous skin from the dam.
Everything else looked finished down low. Did some quick hits at VA lakes and Mammoth Crest during the unstable weather, but I wouldn't recommend them. Saddlebag Lake was the oasis of good snow roadside.

Eastside Conditions/ Trip Report Thread 2018
Will likely be in the saddlebag lake zone with my 12yo on Saturday. It’ll be his first time touring for turns. We’ll probably be taking it easy and taking our time.
Look for a dude skiing in chainsaw chaps and nothing else.

Dang! I’d be there with Owen if we didn’t already have plans to ski Mammoth. Have fun.

An hour of trail hiking to snow on False White right now. Pretty big sun cups and runnels down low, smooth snow on the east face.
Still possible to skin from the parking lot at Saddlebag Lake.
Nice to be back skiing after a month of work hell, sucks that I’m in crap shape from all the self-medicating with beer and food.

I didn’t kill him! And he’s interested in doing it again!
It was a good first experience and a great son/daddy day. It was a beautiful and sunny day. We skied one of the moderate slopes above greenstone. A lot of flailing and trying to figure out how to skin, both sidehilling (around the lake), up steeper stuff, pacing yourself for the long day, etc. It’s easy to forget how much energy it takes to recover from flailing.
I was impressed with his attitude by end of day! I carried in a library book that he had grabbed on the way out of town, which was key to helping him calm and get less gripped after a challenging time climbing. Also, gourmet lunch and low expectations.
I also forgot lip balm (oops!)
Beta, some guys told us that y couloir on conness was not quite in spring corn.
Other parenting highlights: mobile station (of course), and letting the kid explore travertine. I’ve been going there for a few decades and never knew there were multiple terraces of tubs. We saw the sunset from there.
Dry tooling at end of day with a classic in background.

Went back towards conness yesterday but just skied off of greenstone ridge. You can still skin from pretty close to the dam if you want, but the sun cups are making it not so enjoyable. The ratio of effort to good skiing is getting pretty high. But not yet quite time to resort to patch skiing.

Anyone have any Ellery Bowl beta? Thinking about running through Tioga en route to Mammoth on Thursday afternoon. Chute Out skiable? Remember, I barely need snow. Main objective is to run up to Plateau with camera in tow to take some nice photos of Dana etc with skiing an afterthought. You know, since the sun is up for so long.

I didn't look closely at Chute Out but if you really, really wanted to ski Ellery Bowl yesterday you could have. My recollection is that the top half coverage is fine. You'd likely have to do a somewhat spicy short traverse with skis off 2/3rds of the way down to connect the patches. Or you might be able to connect it on skis with a little bit of sidestepping uphill a few yards. And then some fairly steep but not completely out of the question down-climbing the last hundred or so feet. I'd probably feel comfortable about doing it if I had your skiing ability. I'm looking forward to video of that descent; I doubt anyone else has down it in a while.

Sounds perfect to me guys...its going to be the quickest bang given my time-frame. I'm also without kids which is rare...so dirty chutes? Who cares...crampons for the win.
I found a recent photo of Ellery on Instagram:
Speaking of dirty chutes and down-climbing...here's some Mammy footage over Memorial Day 2018:
