I guess in that regards it’s similar.
I was thinking about the shock of the loss I guess. You expected Shane to kill himself eventually so when it happened it was less traumatic.

100 unfamous people die in car crashes every day in the US.
3200 per day worldwide.
(obviously both averages)
Taking calculated risk was shane’s job. A lot of though went into his jumps, I hope.

God, the more I think about this, why the fuck would the pilot, or kobi, take such risk in that weather, to go up and over that mountain. For a basketball game?
I’m starting to feel real sorry for the other passengers.l, I hope they get compensated. It was basically Kobi’s chopper.
Wish there was a black box with Audio.

Have you ever met a helicopter pilot? Every single one of those dudes think they are cooler than Tom Cruise in Top Gun and have better skills. Just because it was Kobe's bird doesn't make Kobe responsible for why it crashed.
This is getting ridiculous. Literally 99.9% of people are going to hear "free ride in a helicopter with Kobe" and hop right the fuck on without thinking twice.
Live Free or Die
I have several friends, colleagues, and former classmates who are or were professional helicopter pilots, and not even one of them thinks that.
My point above with the car fatalities, was that helicopters aren't inherently anywhere near as dangerous as they're perceived to be by much of the public. They are used to perform some very dangerous work that can result in fatal accidents, but flying across LA isn't that.
This was nothing more than poor judgement and bad decision making.
Might have been true with ex vietnam vet types but that was a long time ago
I know a few locally, up here they are doing exploration, forestry, I have flown with them into the mountains, run the hook end of the long line and they are not dare devils they are laid back slow methodical & careful
one local won the HAI award for pilot of the year, 20000 hrs accident free, I've run the hook a couple times where I seen him setting down loads he couldn't hover at take-off with cuz he couldnt hover them on my end after burning off fuel, amazing pilot skills and a pretty good defenceman too

In the U.S., the fatality rate per 100,000 hours of motor vehicle driving time is 0.017, while fatality rate of non-military helicopters is 1.44 per 100,000 flying hours in nonmilitary helicopters. Based on time, the risk of death while flying on a non-military helicopters is 85 greater than risk of death in a motor vehicle. Source: https://slate.com/news-and-politics/...than-cars.html
Yes. My ex brother in law had two DSC’s flying blackhawks. Died from ptsd. Rip.
it seems they were in a sticky situation, that pilot or Kobi made the call to take a big chance going into the soup and over that mountain.
I’d say the buck stops with the pilot, but I think it’s a fair question to wonder if the big man in the back put any pressure on the pilot.
I doubt the passengers had a say but knew something was out of the norm.

I call BS, the big man is just the passenger, this could have been an uber,
its up to the pilot 100% who also has a vested interest in surviving
