Ok, fine, I enjoyed the sock carnage I just caused, but will fess up. We actually did cover the socks EXTENSIVELY in the zwift group/thread, and it was determined that all riders there like the taller socks (but not over the calf.) With the exception of me. I believe that one should only wear low/no show for road. I am right, of course, and everyone else is wrong, but that was still the final tally.

For mountain, ride whatever the hell you want to stay protected.

Except pants. Don't fucking wear pants. The only acceptable temperature range for wearing pants is -20 Fahrenheit or lower. That's negative 28 degrees Celsius in non-freedom units for our Canadian friends, who are really the only ones this might apply to outside of Alaska, Gunnison and the Upstates.

Tall sock are amazing for ticks, briars, and scrub. I still can’t wear them.

For years, almost every ride we did had significant bushwhacking/over landing as we explored and flagged new routes. At certain times of the year, the burrs and seeds would stick all over your socks (and gloves), super low socks were the right call, as the burrs didn’t stick to skin.

My last trail-sniffing mission had me schwacking through the vilest thickets and I ended up COVERED in fucking burrs. Took forever to deburr myself and I was itchy for a couple of days afterwards.

Been mostly riding the road bike since the new mountain bike didn’t pan out, and I’m pissed at my old hunk of junk.

Blew up the road bike’s front derailleur on today’s ride, which I didn’t think was something that actually ever happened.

At least 10 speed road front derailleurs appear to be one of the few things there hasn’t been a run on during the pandemic

Just don’t blow up your 10x2 shifters/brakes (I refused call them brifters).
I just spent a week on the internet trying to find a set for a client.

I had a wheel build due first thing this morning, that I only got the parts for at the end of the work day. I began the build after dinner around 8:30, and at 10:30pm I dropped the smallest of small critical part on my shop floor. I had swept earlier in the day, but still had to crawl around on my hands and knees to look for this part.
I performed a grid search on each rubber floor square to no avail, and then ran a heavy magnet over the whole area, and then swept the floor and inspected the sweep pile. I took a break and went back to trueing the original wheel. My next option was the shop vac, I emptied the shop vac and put a fresh filter on it. My plan was to shop vac the whole floor and then put the magnet in the collection bin to find the part (and all other metal bits).
I figured I'd do one more hands and knees search before I fired up the vac, and i luckily found the part in my original sweep pile zone.
To give you reference it was a 2mm deep M3 set screw that is driven by 1.5mm hex key. Fawk, what a waste of my time.

Completely 1st world problems, but trying to figure out what insert to buy for my first is a bit overwhelming. All inspired by the buddies telling me Cush Core or Vittoria are the way to go, few rim strikes lately, and then PB article pushing me over the edge....

Vittorias were my first choice, but are going for over retail right now (if you can find them) which I can't get behind for a giant pool noodle and cush core seems like a PITA. Dipping toe in the water w/ 1 tannus tubeless for the rear of my ST Stumpjumper and may go Vittoria or CC Pro for my H/T when it comes next month.

Pinkbike just did an excellent comparison of tire inserts. Should be on their main page still.

I decided to give Tannus a try (as opposed to DD casing). A buddy donates an EXO DHR for the experiment with a hole in it. I patch the hole, wrestle on the insert (BTW had a harder time with it than CushCore XC for some reason). Air it up and let it sit overnight... no pressure. I assume the patch didn't work, so I wrestle insert and tire off. Discover tape got mangled during the insert install, so replace that and say fuck the insert and put back on an old DD DHR. Wrestle it on, spend a solid 15-20 minutes trying to get the fucker to seat properly all the way around, put it on the bike and give it a spin to check the seating one last time. Notice there's a solid wobble to it at one spot, and assume that the casing was damaged at some point. Strip the tire, and put on a fresh DD DHR, again fighting to get the damn thing to seat fully, air it up, put it on, and give it a whirl. Again, same wobble at the same spot. WTF? Look closer... bent spoke from a stick sometime recently.

So after about 2 hours total of fucking around with tires, all I have to show for it is a blood blister on one finger, Orange Seal all over my hands, a fresh tire that I didn't really need to put on yet, and knowledge that I've got to replace at least one spoke.

Well guess that i'll just reserve this spot for bitching about it when it arrives next week then. Have put off CushCore just to avoid the notorious hassle, sounds like i may have well gone for it.

Thanks you for that, Andeh. Been experiencing similar struggles getting fresh tires on the DH bike, and now I feel better! Spank Trail 295 rims with their center bulge don't leave much room for a beefy 2-ply tire's beads. Now that I'm done and a season pass purchased, it looks to be thunderstorms for the next week at Angel Fire, of course.

Not really a rant - more of a source of amusement. Dude at the lift served bike park, pedaling up the road (which is closed to bikes) on his brand new S-Works ebike (even though all the trails are closed to ebikes).

Way to game the system dude. You totally got out of paying $30 for a lift ticket by dropping $15,000 on an ebike.

I’ve seen those dogs go behind a friend while riding (nothing happened, it was escorting him away from the sheep).

And as an owner of a Great Pyr who is aggressive I can say yeah they are frightening, sometimes absolutely terrifying, but the last fucking thing I’d do is strike one with a rock. That might turn things from a warning (barking and chasing) to an attack.

Bottom line is those dogs don’t mix well with bikers, it’s not their job to be a dog whisperer and know what a Great Pyr will or will not do, so why the F’ are the sheep with those dogs anywhere near the trail system there?

Grazing permits older than mountain biking on multi-use public lands. Private land trail easements for public access. There are more. If I were a generational sheep rancher, it would be easy to ask the inverse. We're the new kids on the landscape in many cases.

Rave, not rant: Have complained about my order for a Norco Optic C2 falling thru. Yesterday a lightly used 2021 C1 came up for sale (shop employee), and for $1400 under retail. Have paid for the bike and everything seems legit.

Will be back with an epic rant if this goes sideways, but for now I’m psyched.

    This article annoys me.

    https://www.outsideonline.com/242426...in-bike-review

I suppose not technically true, since I only made it to “fun loving soul rider” before I couldn’t take any more words. But the part I read annoyed me.

I know...I know: Outside has sucked for years...but this “review” made me not want to buy this bike.

It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

We went to Silver MTN for opening weekend, and the lines were as pictured in the “go forth and ride” thread. They got a little better in the afternoons, but Saturday morning was something else.

Fiancée and a girlfriend she was riding with got blown up by some bucket of unwashed dicks leading a train down Afternoon Delight. She started to move out of the way - she could hear him coming on account of his Bluetooth speaker - but he still nearly hit her. When she said WTF he yelled “It’s a fucking bike park!” at her. Yeah, that’s right- and it’s full of mixed ability riders and kids on 24s so maybe expect that on a blue flow trail.

The local shop crew told us they had a 60ish year old lady tell them how polite they were - apparently she was getting blown up all day.

They didn’t have the Chair 3 zone open yet, so most of the green trails and shorter runs weren’t available.

Still a fun weekend, but seriously: don’t be a dick.

I'm not mad they are there in either place. The Sorenson's have been running sheep on Coyote and the Ogusthorpe's on the Canyon's forever. They predate bike access and I know the Canyon's lease specifically allows him to continue to run sheep during the summer. I've just never had them try to get behind me. I'm used to dismounting and slowing walking by. When one is in front of you barking and the other comes in behind, it scares the crap out of you.
