    Thumbs up Shaun White-Olympian

Great piece on Shaun. So cool to see my old buddy Bud Keene in the shot at the beginning. He's the brilliance behind our US Snowboard team. I learned a lot from him back in the day at Stowe, esp alpine riding.

I've found the commentary this morning an interesting microcosm of the American media. Very little about the win. A whole lot about sexual harassment of a band mate. A few articles about how the flag he draped over himself touched the ground.

It's interesting how society loves to tear someone down. He's an elite snow and skate boarder. Not the CEO of IBM or a politician framing our society. I thought his run was strong and he came through in the clutch. He may be (probably is) the best stunt ditch rider of all time. I enjoyed his run.

Just speculating, but I think it's because the broader public doesn't view snowboarding as a "sport" so much as an activity full of stoned and misguided youth. Halfpipe, slopestyle and some of these other relatively new events get covered way differently than something like speedskating or luge. It's a sideshow, and the stories that get built around it both reflect that status and perpetuate it.

He's the best. That was a remarkable last run. Helluva comeback after Sochi.

But what's so bad about the press covering his sexual harassment? He's a public figure who makes lots of money because he's a public figure. There's this thing called the First Amendment. The claims of the victim, a woman he employed in his band, seem credible and are very disturbing. She had direct evidence, including his texts, of chronic sexual harassment for 7 years, including some really sick shit. Famous and powerful men got away with this shit for hundreds of years. IMO it's a good thing that our culture is finally starting to hold accountable these creeps who think fame and power grants them a license to harass and control women.

I thought it was a great event and the talent and skill is through the roof. That said, the athletes hanging their tongues out for the camera like gene simmons from kiss and shaun white stepping on the flag and dragging it on the ground isnt helping their image any.

Nor was the over the top claim and helmet toss after his first run like the comp was done.

    Agreed.

    However...

I watched the Halfpipe last night with some pretty traditional nonagenarians who had heard of Shaun White and enjoyed watching the half pipe. It was more entertaining than the skating. Figure skating is a bit of a freak show.

wish I could find that pic of him in the halfpipe at the stratton US Open when he was super young. Saw it the other day. We were there.I don't give a flying fuck about any sexual harassment or other BS. Thankful they don't call him the Flying Tomato anymore, I would cringe every time I heard that.

I couldn't agree more, he is a piece of shit. I was rooting for Japan. The flag being drug around on the ground is just a testament to his lack of giving a shit.

I thought White's first run was the best of the comp. I didn't think the japanese kid's was better.

I agree. Snowboarding is here to stay. When you contrast it with sports like skiing and skating it is still very new, but it's incredibly entertaining, the athleticism and talent needed to compete is unquestioned, and the sport is a nexus for a ton of $$. Maybe it's still a sideshow to some people, but it's a legitimate sport. There will always be people out there that think that acting isn't a job, heavy metal isn't music, and 4 years at a liberal arts school is the only way. But the rest of the world is having fun enjoying and appreciating snowboarding just like most of us do.

The whole lawsuit thing started out as a breach of contract suit. The harassment claims only surfaced after the drummer switched lawyers, well after she had lawyered up the first time around. They settled. Oh, he's also alleged to have been "authoritarian."

Athletically, his coming back to peak form after all the drift of the rock band and other distractions is truly remarkable.

    whitewash much?

    copy of victim's Amended Complaint

If 1/4 of the allegations are true, he's an irredeemable piece of shit.

Forcing her to watch a porn movie called Church of Fudge and another porn movie showing the killing of a bear and people fucking on top of the bear carcass? Texting dick pics to a female employee? Bullying her to cut her hair? On and on and on. And people defend this turd?

Of course he settled. She had good evidence and would have kicked his ass had they gone to trial.

Sheez, WTF is it with the kneejerk defense of rich famous creeps like this?

Inclusion of Freeskiing and Snowboarding is not a positive development IMO.

Yeah, he's a total piece of shit, and has been for a long time. He's only out for himself, not about the sport or country. Great snowboarder, but I can't ever bring myself to cheer for him.

I always thought of him as a pompous ass, just a typical self-absorbed kid with talent who let it go to his head. Meh. Then I read the stories of his alleged harassment. I now think he's a piece of shit.
