I don't think it will get too bad. Wisely, the entire roof is white to reflect away some of the heat. I'll have to brainstorm some build out ideas now. I want to keep it pretty minimalist. A small kitchen bench type area for the stove, little counter area, ski storage underneath, some kind of small seating area, and a chinese diesel heater setup of some kind. Mostly for winter use to at least have a place to chill and drink some coffee, eat oatmeal in the AM at a ski area parking lot or trailhead.

That's a very cool looking rendering. How will they get past the Tacoma's pitifully low payload capacity? If it's a factory deal they can't just overload the shit out of it and put in some airbags and claim "it drives fine".

Considering the multitude of old JDM class C rigs built on even smaller architecture, I'd guess they could figure it out. If the rest of my family dies or leaves, I'd totally get one. 2's a crowd though.

I was thinking the same thing. So they are going to need a reinforced frame (why not use the new stiff TNGA frame), rear disc brakes and bigger front brakes, beefier front and rear axle and diffs and springs and shocks, as well as an air bag suspension.
$100k+ if they ever build and sell any at retail.

I'll never understand why Toyota went with shitty drums in the rear and decided not to offer a "Payload package" of some kind to this effect. I get it would encroach on Tundra sales but a stock Tacoma is so, so limited by its ratings

Toyota should offer a HD Tacoma and a 1 Ton Tundra, which would essentially open up 2 new potential sales markets for them.

I agree. I’m pretty sure the Hilux they sell overseas is a great deal more heavy duty but they make more margin on the Tacoma. It’d be nice if they sold a Hilux with a 1 ton rear axle as a chassis cab or a cutaway just for the upfitters. Maybe the market just isn’t big enough to justify it. For that matter, it’d be nice if Ford would sell us the midsized Transit van that is available in other countries.

Those things are sick, of course, but what few seem to realize is that their size is a major impediment to actually using them off road. The MAN kind of trucks were designed for deserts and taiga, not tight forest service roads with overhanging trees.

I met a guy in Baja with one recently. He said it was a little white knuckle getting it to the beach where we were. The road in was barely 4wd, but it was a little narrow and had a dropoff. Mexicans, naturally, drove it in 2wd dually pickups with 3000# of stuff in them and bald tires.

Shit, in the 90's we'd be scouting a dry wash to get through with our FJ62 and some 13 year old fisherman's kid would blast through in a '72 Nova and we'd be "I think we should be okay".
