Why, when 5 and a half minutes of Mariah Carey Christmas music will get you the same result?

Captain Beefheart is usually a room-clearing move.

Captain Beefheart I actually like some of it, like Aaron said, weird but kinda great.

But I don't think there's ever been an album with the room-clearing ability of this one, just click anywhere and play a few seconds of it, loud.

What the hell is that? It sure isn't music.

That would be a great tune to load up on the juke as you walk out the door. Like pulling the pin and tossing the grenade.

I've heard it said that it's avant-garde electronic music. On the other hand I've also heard that Lou owed his record company a record to get out of his contract and they enforced it so he said ok fine, fuck you, here's a record.

I considered posting Metal Machine ice, but swerved & went with Neil.

Beyond Lou's album there was a larger thing going on in NYC. I thought about putting up a Glenn Branca ditty since he inspired Sonic Youth. Here's one that'll clear out the party:

(1977...guess it also belongs in that 70s music thread)

It sounds like Metallica lifted some material from that. I'm hearing proto something or other in that.

Because the key is to play something you like that nobody else likes. I bunch of us like the Cramps.

All this reminded me of the Raincoats, who some people (like me) like, but I put the video up in the "what song is it you wanna hear" thread.

They're kind of a hard band to get people to appreciate.

I still can't believe that anyone actually likes American Pie that much to hear it twice.

The Shaggs. Frank Zappa said they're better than the Beatles. Terry Adams of NRBQ (one of my musical heroes and really into dissonance), said they parallel the lines and structure of Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz. Everybody else said wtf is this shit, turn it off.

Not every band needs a video discussing whether they even had any idea what they were doing.

^^^that guy says they do know what's up, I'm not 100% convinced.

My wife just came to the door of this room I'm in, said, "What the hell are you listening to?" And closed the door.

I just made it halfway through that Foot Foot song.

Pretty sure they're trolling us. Zappa and anyone else who says they know what's going on must be in on the joke.

No way they could play that song again the exact same way.

It's the Jackson Pollack of instrumentation.

Except it's poo instead of oil colors.

There's a Shagg's tribute album, the problem is they're too good, or not bad enough or something.

and the BBC went to New Hampshire to interview them.

oh and I forgot, Kurt Cobain listed their album "Philosphy of the World" as his 5th favorite album of all time. No idea what 1-4 are. Or 6. But hey, Kurt Cobain!
