Einstein Bagels - What the fuck?

They are to bread products what North Face is to sorority girls.

I'd rather eat cream cheese out of a shoe.

99% of bagels are shite. Saw Thomas' ( the English muffin people) setting up a national bagel day display in grand central today. My first thought was "where is Alan Funt hiding?"

It might be heresy but as much as I love a good old boiled & baked NY style bagel I really like steamed bagels too sometimes. Soft yet still with some tooth if done right. Beats the shit outta that sweet crap they serve in Montreal.

They opened one across from the real bagel place here.
Not even close to as good. Mass produced industrial bagel-like product.
    No longer stuck.

Was it the Jewish name that tricked you into trying them?

Don't get me wrong here, I wasn't expecting a traditional bagel. Just something that tasted better than a safeway brand, which I would prefer over Einsteins. That and they just seem to be popular, which I can't fathom.

H&H closed their upper west side place a few years ago... sad. Tax shit I think.

I like both style of NY bagel... Einstein can be described by neither.

Never been to one, but for some reason I ended up on their wikipedia page. Found it interesting that their business model is based around stores being located in places without an extensive history of bagel consumption (in other words they stay the fuck out of the north east).

    What does that tell ya?

    Einstein's

Never underestimate the lack of taste to popularity.

although there are always those out-layers like Hardee's, Krispy Kreme, Waffle House, and Chipotles that knock it out of the park. But I blame those success stories more on sure fire hangover cures than good taste.

This was pretty much my reaction the first and only time I tried an Einstein bagel. Being an ex-NYer, sometimes I get cravings for delicious doughy products such as bagels and pizza. I no longer buy bagels unless I am i am visiting NY. I'll occasionally get some cheesy sauce bread, but I won't call it pizza.
I am still trying to get the North Face/sorority girl reference.

    Wouldn't this work better:

Shitty taste is to Einstein Bagels what North Face is to Sorority Girls.

I could cope without good bagels, but I have no idea how you westerners deal with the pizza, fuck its awful. I guess decent Mexican helps.

    hardee's? don't you mean Carl's Jr.?

I'll take McD's over Carl's. Krispy Kreme, however, you can't beat a glazed donut straight out the fryer and so hot it burns your mouth

I always wondered Who the fuck buys a bagel at a shop... Your life is so busy and complicated that you can't take 2 minutes to toast bread and slap cream cheese on it before walking out the door?

Are you boiling and baking bagels at home?!

The people who think a bagel is round bread with a hole in it are the reason I Can't get good fucking bagels in AK.

No, the reason you can't get a good bagel in AK is because you are fucking AK.

So.... What are some good bagels then?

Actually the bagel place on the Palmer wasilla hwy used to make a good bagel. They are still edible. Silverbow in Juneau makes good bagels.

Seriously- that analogy would make it seem like Einstein bagels was everywhere, or something. Is there no blank:blank as ?:? On the SAT these days?

I was always a fan of Noah's bagels in CA, but don't really care for any bagels that I've found elsewhere. Other than a lender's at my place that I toast and slap cream cheese on, not sure about what all i'm missing in the bagel world.
