Cost of riding
How much do you pay to ride?
I was at a buddies on the weekend. He's selling his 3yo GT whachamacallit to buy a new Trek somthinorother. His GT is still shiny and has about 40 rides max on it. We did a bit of math and came out to about $55/ride for the bike a set of tires & some shop time. Transportation would be on top of that.
I did my math. $2400 Giant reign with about 150 rides on it, a couple sets of tires, brake pads, grips, one up setup and derailleur cable. So I'm into this bike for about $2800. Everything works and it's not bashed up so I figure I could easily sell it for about $800. Very few rides had a transportation cost so I'm running about $20/ride. ($15USD)
Not too bad but about double my last bike that I rode about 450 times over 3 years. You are what you eat.

The first ride cost way more than my car, everything else was free.

Cost of riding
I am killing this game. My main bike is a single speed belt drive that I ride constantly and I do no maintenance on, and I ride 90% from my house.
Well maybe I'm the faggot America
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda

Never do the math on mountain biking. Never.

Better game: What would it cost not to ride?
I'd go fucking insane. I'm not sure what the breakdown on that is, but I bet's it's pretty expensive.

Never thought about it this way but I'm at about $2 per mile with my 3 season old HIghtower.

I've probably spent $6k or so on my Bronson counting upgrades and replacing parts, and I'm at about 5,000 miles (mostly dirt) and counting. I'm comfortable with that.

Just do that math differently. You aren't paying by ride. You are paying by minute of joy. For me that includes the prep, the wrenching, the expectation, the travel time, the beer time afterwards, the laying in bed dreaming of the perfect corner, the driving the car while feeling bike tires beneath you, the rest stops, the meeting of friends at bike swaps, the internet time spent on bikes, and the actual pedal time.
I'll bet that's close to an average of 1,000 hours per year for years and years. At maybe a buck an hour. You can't get that price for an hour of entertainment anywhere except for television (fuck that) or music (hell yes.)
I'm fine with my monetary choices, and my 20+ bikes in the garage.
Dirt freaking cheap.

Quote from a guy at a marina " I spend about 3 weeks a year working on it and it costs XXXX per year for a boathouse to moor it in, I suppose I could have just taken up a religion but i bought a wooden boat instead "

One of my regular riding buddies seems to brake a part every two rides so his cost is probably $50 per ride not including the initial bike purchase. I got great value out of the old bike but just bought a replacement so need to get a lot of riding in to make the purchase price easier to swallow.

Cost of new bike minus selling price of old bike equals $1400. All maintenance has been with old parts and stuff laying around, but its due for a full overhaul ($200 in parts and whiskey for my bike shop buddy). Since i purchased the new bike last winter (didnt ride till spring) i have probably 50-60 rides. So for <1year of use im looking at $27/ride. I plan on keeping this bike for at least another 2 years, and maintaining it at about the same rate which works out to about $11/ride.

Cost of riding
I’ll take the other side of the argument. Not only is it therapy that may save your marriage / job / family relations but it’s fantastic for all your health numbers and will save your life in the long run.
That and it promotes friendships, beer drinking and weed consumption. Whats better than that fuckos?
