20 hours in Beijing. What to do?

Next month I have a 20 hour layover in Beijing. Never been before. Will have an afternoon and evening available for sightseeing and eating. Great Wall visit seems like it will be pushing it so prefer to stay in town. Will probably do the obvious (Tiananmen, Forbidden City, etc.,...) unless you can convince me otherwise. Specifics on dining would be appreciated.

the Beijing Planning Exhibition Hall is pretty coolish, it's basically a museum of the city but the main attraction is the map, which is upstairs. It's more of a model than a map, with little models of every major building and other features like parks etc. It's huge, like maybe 5,000 sq. ft., and very detailed, with walkways and little bridges and shit so you can get a good view.

It's right by Tiananmen Square. and it gives you a good idea of the expanse of the place and where you are and so on, and it doesn't take long to get a good idea of the place. Of course it's kinda propaganda but it's cool anyways.

Plenty of time to interview 25yo mail order bride that can work in a massage parlor giving $200 rub and tugs back home.

I would do Forbidden City, etc. with that much time.

Pretty sure you will need an entry Visa, which you have to get in advance.

Seems like I meet the requirements for the 144 hour transit visa so hopefully it won't be an issue.

Personally, I'd skip all the big tourist attractions and just go on a 20 hours foodie/drink bender, but maybe that's just me.

We were there in April and and the Forbidden City is pretty cool. Ice’s suggestion sounds great & I would’ve liked to have done that, but we were on an organized event. We ate at 1949, and it was great, but didn’t get to go to many other places to compare.

I've been to Beijing a few times for work.

I had a great time on this Great Wall tour- https://www.backpackingchina.com/tou...g-Simatai-West

If the timing works for you I highly recommend it.

If not, the summer palace is worth a visit and you can easily get there and back in a taxi from Beijing. The summer palace was unfortunately destroyed by the British during one of the opium wars and while it was rebuilt in the late 1800s it isn't anywhere close to what it apparently was in the past. It kinda feels like a movie set. Either way, worth a visit.

It's possible to visit Tiananmen Square, the summer palace and the Forbidden City in a day. I'd also highly recommend a bike tour of the city if you aren't sure about figuring out taxis out to the summer palace. I used http://www.bikebeijing.com/

You'll get an English speaking guide who can cater to your interests (drinking, sight seeing, etc). It was surprisingly fun biking around Beijing.

    Used to live there.

I'd walk around the Forbidden City and Beihai Park (they're next to each other), then get a massage here (sorry, not a happy ending spot), followed by some duck at Quanjude.
