Congress to vote on Cannabis Legalization: Write your congressperson

The House will vote Friday on the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act, or MORE Act, which would decriminalize cannabis and clear the way to erase nonviolent federal marijuana convictions.

The MORE Act would also create pathways for ownership opportunities in the emerging industry, allow veterans to obtain medical cannabis recommendations from Veteran Affairs doctors and establish funding sources to reinvest in communities disproportionately affected by the war on drugs.

Friday's vote would mark the first time a full chamber of Congress has taken up the issue of federally decriminalizing cannabis.

It will pass the House and never get a vote in the Senate.

    edit: it passed the House.

The Senate is the most undemocratic and fucked up idea this country ever had.

Sure. Does that mean we shouldn't write our Senators to, as our employees, tell them what to do?

I've written to my Senator repeatedly and he's still a fuckhead. He's demonstrated he's a fuckhead and will continue to be so. This, along with legalization, is something I will vote for every time and talk to my friends and family about but in my case changing his mind isn't happening.

Edit: I emailed the fuckhead and my other Senator. We'll see how they vote. I'm interested given the recent election results to legalize it here in MT.

I hadn't taken you as someone who gives up.

From the Republican point of view, isn't enforcing these outdated laws an invasion of privacy, not to mention a cost the federal government should not be bearing?

Yeah decrease expenses, plus in some state you're gonna collect more sales taxes without 'raising taxes?' The increase in tax collection to help offset covid relief a little bit? Create jobs in the industry?

    What's the downside?

While we search for principled Republicans, can we also look for Bigfoot?

You are free to piss in the wind all you want, my friend. It doesn't fucking matter though, because for now, Mitch will never bring it up for a vote in the Senate.

Bumping this to repeat that. If Warnock and Ossoff win, the craziness that has been US marijuana policy will finally end. Call a Georgia stoner and get them to vote.

^ I won't go into polyass detail, but no, marginal Dem control of the Senate, while making a big difference on a lot of issues, would probably not be enough to put cannabis decrim over the top. But hey, winning a House vote... progress!

There was a federally commissioned study on this subject in the early '70's. The results showed that there was no big risk in legalizing. But Nixon ordered the results not be released because he believed legal weed would make it harder to arrest Blacks, Jews and Hippies (He used more pejorative terms).

All that has changed is that no one is scared of hippies anymore, plus Nixon's paranoid fixation on nonexistent communist Jews is irrelevant:

    We know that:

    A) Enforcing marijuana laws costs billions every year
    B) Spending more money on enforcement doesn't reduce the amount people use.
    C) Legalizing doesn't do much to increase marijuana use.

Illegal weed is all about putting certain people in jail.

Living in skinhead land up North, I don't know of anyone regardless of political affiliation who does think at least decriminalization is a bad idea.

I think the only people who are against it are old school republican ex-cops/criminal justice system people. And old people afraid of reefer madness.

All, I'm getting at is, despite the potential futility, our representatives in Washington are going to remain ignorant of their electorates demands.
