Scott not running and the entrance to Wolverine being closed (along with the traverse to Lower Beaver) was very noticeable.

I get why they close the entrance to Wolverine in bad visibility now. But, I do not like it. With the Lower Beaver entrance open things would have been good for at least another hour and maybe all day with some work.

There is a kids'(teenager) big mtn comp this weekend that will take out some good terrain at Alpine.

Really hoping they decide to get Scott spinning again.

Anyone skiing KW this Tuesday. I may have a window to actually get a day of skiing in. Inbounds or tour out the back door.

I *may* be able to swing tuesday.

and I have to say the best thing lately about a day trip to the 'Wood (besides the mountain itself) is the taco truck that's taken up residence at 49 and ridge road. Epic tacos.

    Dear Alpine,
Thank you for keeping Low Beaver closed. Please make this a permanent thing.

I rarely ski Alpine, but strongly support this idea. Taos does it, Tahoe should too. Traverse tracks across fall lines are no good. E.g. bowls like KW's Wall could be much more effectively enjoyed if the fanout of traverse lines didn't destroy the whole looker's right side of it. Imagine a world where each rider pushes the high(est) traverse line out no more than 50 feet before dropping (and low entries are closed).

well at kirkwood, they'd have to ban snowboarders for that to happen.

Too true my friend. I crush an Al pastor Super Burrito every damn time on the way home.

So, i can day trip to Kwood on Sunday, or Squalpine/Kwood/Sugarbowl on Monday- all are free tickets through vouchers or passes. Do you think Patol at Kwood will open 6 and a good amount of terrain at a decent hour after the expected overnight dump? Or should i wait till monday to head to AM and hope that the hikes open for the first time that morning? I havent been to AM this year and the TGR premier voucher is burning a hole in my pocket. Then again Kwood on Monday could be real, real good too assuming only 6 opens on Sunday...Maybe some gnar at SB will have good enough coverage to giv'er a go? This may be my last day this year due to certain work/academic commitments(will be MIA till late April) and i want to have one last banger of a day.

    Thots?

How so? It's just as easy for a snowboarder to go out along the high Wall traverse road as a skier on his hideously fat skis.

    THIS! x's 1,000,000
Same goes for high yellow/sherwood cliffs. Greedy skiers fucking up the entire mountain with their 1 mile of traversing for 100 vertical feet of pow.

The worst fan is Wolverine Bowl. I can't see any way to prevent it. Idiots will always be idiots. But closing Low Beaver is an excellent idea, although I suspect it had to do with snow safety rather than preserving the line. Once Wolverine Bowl is open from saddle, which happened mid-morning you can't really blast Beaver--too big a risk that someone will duck a rope into Lower Beaver while they're blasting.

Just brought up this exact example last week discussing that with my buddy. West Basin completely changed 8+/- years ago when they removed the West B low traverse. Turbi, 5th and stauffy were 10 times the runs they were before...such a good decision!

No pic TR. 2 laps yesterday early at h20 house. Got out of there by 1045. Really nice snow on upper 1/2. Bottom has never really been great this season. Solid 10inches of fresh up there with a few deeper spots. No instability noted with only small cornice building at summit. On 2nd lap still no other tracks to be found. Looking for a refresher here tonight and tomorrow to make it even deeper.

I use that lower beaver traverse all the time to get over to bernies area when everything else is closed (just like the rest of the sidestepping alpine universe). But I'd be all over signing a petition to get alpine to consider closing it until beaver is proper ready.

About the only bad thing would be that lower face into kangaroo would get cooked a lot of the time and wouldn't get skied the only time the snow is good (in clouds and not getting cooked with beaver closed).

    But whatevah......it's a ski area.

^^ That's pretty much how I feel. It'd be fine, but not a big deal either way. If you really want uninterrupted pow lines, there are plenty of places to go do that. I just view the traverse track as a little bump to boost off of and make due. When they get sloppy and there are like 5 of them (or more), that is annoying though.

That is a fair enough pt. I usually skip a high beaver and go to Estelle.

I predict that frontside of kirkwood will open on sunday. i doubt the gnar terrain at SB will open this season. I would like to be wrong.

it's not hard to figure out which traverse tracks were set by low-suck boarders, maybe not on the wall because of major general gape (y'all know how to ride through those tracks, right?), but definitely into the outer sentinel regions. they're not the only users once the track is set, but they still set the initial track

You guys sound like a bunch of commie red Obama loving socialist with your calls for more rules an more regulations. The ski resort is a free market. Don't expect a day ticket holder visitor's goals to align with your own.

I for one do like a well regulate resort akin to Alpines old don't fuck up the corn policy. Don't think much could be done with KW's layout. I feel like the pre Vail resort would get 2-3 traverse lines. Post Vail it is pretty much all traverse lines. That in essence I why I miss the old broken ski hill it used to be. More conscientious long time local skiers and fewer day whores.

I can still remember hiking a high T behind Skiin Ian a winter or two ago. He stopped for a ten second breather on a ledge to take a look at te lines and some guy who just shows up on our traverse then steps off to get around us an proceeds to put a waist deep diagonal across the entire bowl until he connects with the low traverse on the other side. The free market sucks. It is too crowded with too many people with too many different goals. But the Wild West rules. If you want an interrupted fall line turns head out to the BC.
