Anyone heading to waterton to ski the nearly 1m of snow (at the town site elevation)?

Hell... I'd bet there would even be some good turns in calgary where we have 29cm on the patio furniture I failed to put away properly for the season.

Figure this is as good a place as any to post - I'm eyeing a trip between X-mas and NYE to Kicking Horse or Fernie. Any recommendations as to which will have better snow, fewer crowds, and better skiing?

Which ever one has better snow, will have the bigger crowds and better skiing.

Fernie is a bit riskier, and will either be amazing pow, or you will be hung over and have coffee jitters. Larger hill with more terrain overall

KH is a bit more rockies, with colder temps, snow lasts, but less of it. Limited lifts.

Banff is a safer, lower risk/reward place too. 3 ski areas, and day trips to KH and Pano are easy.

Fernie does not need a big base for decent skiing, especially with the summer grooming this year. With high fire hazard over the last few years, early season had been a bit of an alder bash....hopefully better now.

Fernie gets bigger crowds than Kicking Horse, but handles them better. You will never find crowded slopes at kicking horse, but if you get a bluebird powder day during the holidays, the gondola line can be brutal.

That said, early season at Kicking Horse can be pretty spectacular. And it's easy to hit both. Lodging in Golden will be more affordable than Fernie.

I'm a weekender based in Calgary and I ski Louise, Kicking Horse and Fernie on my pass. Once Fernie and Kicking Horse open, I mostly ski those resorts until later season, when I focus more on Louise.

I agree that Louise, and especially Sunshine, handle crowds better than the BC resorts (especially Kicking Horse). Rain is not a significant risk in Alberta either, but some years can have a bit of a slow start.

    .
Terrain wise area wise KH has 3400 acres listed whereas Fernie has 2500.
