Ya figure Cap'n Intangibles outs himself before he's eligible for the hall?

McGriff belongs in the hall of Jim Rice and Tony Pena (not in the hall of fame). Edgar was scary even when he was old. I'd vote him.

Ozzie Smith was an artist. Even if he were statistically similar to Vizquel (and I don't think that's the case) he crushes Omar when it comes to being an icon. He was beautiful to watch.

Omar is the best fielding (%) SS of all time. He was a magician out there. Sure he didn’t have a nifty backflip, but I’m not trying to boost him up by tearing down an equally great Smith. I think he gets in over the next 5 years.

    OFFICIAL 2017 MLB THREAD

Fine, he can be in the hall of Fielding Percentage.

there’s also tons of ozzie smith love in this thread. he was a wiz when there were no other great shortstops around, quite unlike the era of jeter, nomar, arod, and omar. would anyone have noticed if he played ten years later? i am not sure. rey ordonez and some other people were objectively as good as smith in the field, maybe better according to science. that guy at least couldn’t hit enough to stick around and his offensive numbers are pretty comparable. there’s a chance that in a different era smith would have been a little more of a force offensively or maybe we all would have shrugged.

i find it useful to look at a sorted list of career war for these cases, and when you see a guy between granderson and knoblauch does that really scream hall of famer?

Mark Bellanger was a damn fine shortstop. So were Gary Tempelton and Dave Concepcion. Their careers overlapped a wee bit with that of the Wizzard of Oz.

It's unfortunate that the eye test is the only way to adjust for stealing hits. Omar bare-handing the 27th out of a no-hitter could have turned into an error and knocked down that fielding %, but getting that out didn't do much in his stats. Omar's offense was more situational than he gets credit for, too. I'm not sure he will go in, but I think he should.

Honestly, I think if you have to go to WAR to make a HoF case then they shouldn’t make it. To me it’s not about stats, but it should be obvious that they were one of the best players ever at their position.

Nobody watched Fred McGriff and thought: that’s hall of fame talent. To me, the players needed to be “Must See TV” in a way that you had to watch them when they were at bat or in the field. Jeter, Papi, etc.

It’s hall of fame, not hall of putting up solid numbers over a long career.

Seriously?? WAR is without a doubt the most useless statistic ever created.

I think to be in the HOF you have to be a dominant player at your position during the time you played. That was probably the original criteria, but it has gotten so diluted nowadays.

One of my earliest "Whoa" memories of baseball is when the Cards and Padres swapped Ozzie and Templeton. Seemed pretty equal at the time, so it confused my young mind not knowing all the intricacies of the other side of the game.

Speaking of WAR, Nomar has about the same WAR as Vizquel in about half as many games.

WAR definitely fails to tell the whole story. if you had to take a peak nomar or omar for a game, season or five year chunk who would you choose? are there players in the hall you wouldn’t pick over them? this question sort of drives who i would enshrine.

The Yankees have done a great job squandering all of their chances this decade so no reason to think they wouldn’t have blown this one somehow, too.

Yeah fuck those guys. They stole a championship and robbed Kershaw of his rightful place as the greatest pitcher of his generation. Feel bad for Ethier too, who deserved a championship.

Did St Louis cheat Kershaw too? I mean they hacked the Stros, so not like they had the high moral ground.

Wait, how did they rob Kershaw of his place as the greatest regular-season pitcher of his generation?

    Define generation I guess?

He's the best pitcher of the last decade, easily.

    Clayton Kershaw last decade:

    1,996 IP
    59.1 fWAR
    156-61 record
    2.31 ERA
    25 complete games
    15 shutouts
    434 walks
    2,179 strikeouts
    164 ERA+
    0.962 WHIP
    1 MVP
    3 Cy Young Awards
    1 no-hitter
    8 All-Star appearances

Only knock is post season which looking at splits above, he had it when there wasnt a camera on his catcher in 2017 World Series...

I mean last ten years, he was a lot better
Last 10 years the only player in baseball with more WAR is Mike trout.

1st and 2nd place in ERA+ by decade
    2010-2019
    1st - Kershaw 164
    2nd - deGrom 147
    diff 17

    2000-2009
    1st - Pedro 152
    2nd - Johan 143
    diff 9

    1990-1999
    1st - Maddux 162
    2nd - Pedro 156
    diff 6

    1980-1989
    1st - Clemens 139
    2nd - Gooden 132
    diff 7

Or are you saying he doesn't need the ring to be the best of his generation?
