Big Ass Boulders Destroy Hwy 145 between Dolores & Telluride

#SWCODOT CO 145 ROCK FALL UPDATE:
CO 145 between Cortez & Telluride is closed indefinitely due to a significant rock fall which occurred this afternoon. The slide is located approximately 12 miles north of Dolores, MP 22. The slide consisting of dirt, rock and two huge boulders which have destroyed the full width of the highway pavement, leaving a trench approximately eight feet deep across both lanes. The road is impassable at this time.
A geo-technical team, equipment and supplies are being mobilized to the site, but it is not known when the road can be re-opened. A boulder, the size of a building, which remains embedded on the highway needs to be blasted into smaller pieces in order to move it off the roadway.

Note also that there is a closure of 550 due to Iron Horse Bike race from Durango to Silverton Sat AM.
    Best regards, Terry

That’s crazy. Looks flat near the road too. Where did that boulder start from?

Might as well just pave a new road around it. I think we are going to see a lot more of this kinda stuff this season with the amount of moisture and freeze/thaw we have been getting.

Yeah, super saturated soils on moderately steep slope in this case. They were from the the west slope (left of the original image) which has a cliff band and lots of boulders sitting on the slope in the soil. I've been by them at least a hundred times and you could just tell they wanted to come down. Here a view from the other side that sort of shows the slope:

Here are more images from the CDOT post on FB, starting with the path:

About 10 or 12 years ago in March, my son and I went up and back on a day trip to Telluride. On the way back, around 10 miles further up the road, near Priest Gulch, there was a 10' tall boulder in the middle of the road, along with several smaller ones which broke free due the freeze/thaw. A nearby resident said he had been watching it for twenty years expecting it to come down.

And for grins, aerial views. You can just make out Wiley at the top of the second image:

EDIT: from a friend at CDOT:
"I asked one of our crew what he thought. He says, in his opinion, it was probably a rather slow moving slide with much more plowing than tumbling as you mentioned!"

Don’t think that’s going to be a viable option. The road is already pretty close to the river at that point. Plus those cliff bands go on for miles, and likely to fail anywhere. Maybe it would be possible to shift the entire road over to the other side of the river, but that would be crazy expensive.

Ho Lee Fuk! I saw the headline this morning, never would I have thunk that they could have stayed that hudge all they way down the mountain.
Hope they have a live feed when they blast 'em!

From that aerial shot they could just build a rad chicane.

Also, this could make for some great roadside bouldering!

Reminds me of one of the greatest rockfall videos ever caught on a dashcam:

    Talk about a near- miss.

One of those measured at 8.5M lbs. I mean, I guess I will take their word on it.

One estimate I read was 2.5 million lbs on the Dolores rock. They've created a single lane bipass to open access.

Boom, how boulder babies are made:

Cool! Now all they have to do is put the "landscaping rocks" up on Craigslist: "Free - You Haul." The rocks will be cleared out in minutes and it'll save the tax payers a small fortune! Would be kind of cool to have some of those in your garden. Neat conversation pieces for sure.
