80 mile an hour gusts at 10K made yesterdays decision easy. 5 of us (including Beartooth Will who was celebrating his 50th B-day) headed out to Copper City for a ride on the Fatties.

It was a mix of windblown areas with no snow to areas fully drifted over and a lot of well packed sections of snow in between. We got in 10 miles and 1000+ feet of climbing. It was windy to start and then died out. Amazing 4:40 sunset.

I live near a development that has a bunch of open space trails that are accessible from the doorstep. Good way to regain sanity for an hour.

This fat biking thing isn't too bad.

Next time? Slow down before making that right turn onto the bridge. It was water ice covered with about 1" of light and fluffy. I went down faster than the speed of light and landed on my hip. Nothing broken but it hurts like hell.

I was there this morning, almost exact same conditions. Forearm and hip are definitely sore.

On one of mine the handlebar end poked into me and broke a rib.
Great feeling, laying on the trail, alone, slowly wheezing...

That is one of the issues I have had to face with getting out into semi-bumfuck Egypt on a fat ride.

If you break down or even worse get hurt the clock is a real factor and several friends who are really into more Backcountry style riding have what they consider emergency clothing.

It looks pretty puny to me if you have to walk out or stay warm.

Solo without a lot of people around is hanging it out a bit. Few years ago a new student at MSU was up a nearby canyon on a popular trail alone. He had a ski malfunction, got lost and ended up dying.

My crash was in a neighborhood trails system so at least a dog would have stopped to piss one me.

Shoulda never quit smoking cigarettes. Gained 50 pounds in 10 years. Was super skinny back in the nicotine addict days. Would be way worse without the 50 miles a week I hike, some solo, some with the scout troop fully packed, multi day, nice elevation. Still up to 175 pounds now when I was at 120 at age 35. I'm 5'8"..
Go that way really REALLY fast. If something gets in your way, TURN!

So i'm looking at getting into Fatties... Live very close to some great riding (3 minutes) so thought it only makes sense.

What should i be looking at in regards to going large? Seems like some of you guys have had good luck going the bikes direct route, in the end is it better going with a lower end name brand over those?

I'm a sucker for a good deal so i'll be looking used and older models first!

    Thanks dudzzzzzzz

I've done quite a bit of this and had friends skating all over it the previous couple days, most places the ice was about 5 inches think, plenty safe. I do carry some of these ice awls in the sleeves of my jacket so I have a shot at self extracting.

Last year a buddy got some drone footage of me on a local lake

in regards to tires... thoughts on the Specialized Ground Control 4.6 for snow/packed. Also are they studable?

I ran them for 2 years and liked them for pretty much every condition. The sidewalls are a bit thin though so beware of too much rubbing and if you run low pressures the rubber will flake off where they crease. They do not have stud pockets and as mentioned are pretty thin so they wouldn't be my first choice for ghetto studding.

I studded mine without any issues. IMHO, it's the best rear tire under 5 inches out there.
