Wouldn't a tram to Sunrise/Burroughs and Steamboat Prow be better?

Yes, that would be glorious. One in the Chiwawa river area would be great too, tram laps on the Mt. Maude North Face would be hyuuuge.

How in the world did I miss that thread?
That was an entertaining read, too bad they don't have a HOF over there.

I don't understand the controversy. Seems like a pretty benign form of civil disobedience.

The Chinese just built a parking lot at 14,000' on Everest. No reason we can't do the same at Rainier. Heck, super easy to do at Baker too.

Would the parking lot at Baker hover 4000' over the summit?

I've not spent much time there but if the gate wasn't there wouldn't it be a net positive for public access?

I think the NPS over manages everything. I prefer the USFS style a little more.

    Tsk-tsk.
One shouldn't threaten one of the fundamental functions of the rangers at Rainier.

The FS keeps roads, paved even, gated seasonably all the time. Even when they are only partially snow covered.

The reason that this particular instance was controversial is that they could have legally parked in the sno park and accessed the White River road from there. Of course this means they would have had to ride their sleds over a large section of dry pavement. The gate is in place because there isn't any room to accommodate parking and turnaround where the snow starts, and/or people might to try and continue over the snow in a wheeled vehicle getting stuck and likely abandoning the vehicle. It would be a colossal clusterfuck if they were to just leave the gates all open and allow unrestricted access during these shoulder seasons.

Their plan had been to drive up White River Rd. until they hit snow and then sled in. They planned on cutting the lock to do this. How do I know this? One of the party members told me in a pm at TAY. They also cut the lock on the Eightmile gate up the Icicle. This really isn't civil disobedience.

I stand corrected but I'm still highly skeptical of the NPS having the best interest of the public in mind. I think they engage in rent seeking and empire building behaviors way more than the USFS - and tend to treat the general public with great disdain.

OK. This comment from that thread was pretty funny: "What would John Muir do? He would be pissed they paved the road in the first place. He would keep the gates closed all year. He would walk the 15 miles in wearing wool pants and leather boots, sit in a tempest for hours to observe the glaciers, eat an apple and walk back out. " LOL

Still sounding promising for a Turkey Day weekend opening with the current forecast at the windy hill, per my insider sources.

I'd didn't think it was cold enough to blow snow. Maybe I'll run up there tomorrow and check it out. There doesn't appear to be any snow below about 5500'.

From the sounds of it, they will be able to start blowing tonight. Big wildcard is Sunday. Otherwise temps in the high 20s with low humidity this whole week.

When I was up on Beehive Mt. earlier this week looking at the Ridge and the ground was bare below the upper basin. I'll be surprised if they can open before Saturday and even that would be iffy I think.

Got the angry inch in Winthrop this morning. Looks like snow stuck around about to 3500.
