Looks like we just lost a carrier

USS Bon Homme Richard, docked in San Diego for a two year refit, began burning yesterday morning. By evening the fire spread throughout the vessel, even reaching the bridge (pic attached). She continued burning through the night. At some point the flight deck collapsed and, a few hours ago, the fire was declared a Class D, which I understand means the a actual metal of the ship is burning. Not good.

From latest Naval presser- 1) Fire still burning in at least two points; 2) 400 Navy personnel assigned to fire fighting; and 3)
Fire started in the well deck in the area of some construction and building material.

Saw that coming back from the vet this morning. I didn't realize it was that bad, but knew burning for 24 hours was bad news.

So, I see the boom around it already. Do they do anything more to try and prevent the flames from getting to the fuel, or preventing the fuel from leaking into the surrounding area? Stupid question but really curious.

That is terrible, but pretty meaningless from a national defense perspective: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aircra...ational_fleets

The U.S. Navy has the largest carriers in the world, and currently has eleven in service. The UK has two 65,000-tonne STOVL carriers in active service. China has two STOBAR carriers in service. The navies of France, India, and Russia each operate a single medium-sized fleet carrier. The US has nine similarly sized Amphibious Warfare Ships. There are three small light carriers in use capable of operating both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, Italy operates two, and Spain one.

Damn! The overhaul was almost done (scheduled May completion) at a little over $200MM. https://www.upi.com/Defense-News/201...9601536325239/

Apparently there's about 1MM gallons of fuel aboard. That has the potential to seriously suck.

Iran. Payback for the “random” explosions that have been occurring recently at their military and nuclear facilities.

I saw some speculation online that a contractor might have caused this - hatches left open for water or compressor lines, flammable materials near where someone was welding, etc. If so, that will be a fun conversation to have with their insurance.

Having no idea what's going on with this that was my first thought when the OP said in a construction area. That contractor is having a bad day for sure.

If it is Halliburton doing the contract work, they should be fine, and will actually make money off this.

Probably their insurer already wrote the check for policy limits.

Really? I would have guessed that right now they're working hard to find a way to deny the claim.

Maybe they shouldn't have hired the contractor that was rehabbing Notre Dame.
