    GL to oftpistes' lad.

Curious what venue they will use at Kicking Horse. Hope they have a good snow year and not super sketchy snowpack. Also the footage I saw from Hakuba last year was not great, maybe it was a bad weather venue choice.

That was a backup venue due to avi risk i think i remember seeing. And also a FWQ so less waiting period maybe? Hopefully they get good conditions.

I don't think they have decided yet but Ozone's been tossed around, but suspect avy conditions would need to work out perfectly. The run the Wrangle 4* off T1 so could always use that.

Not sure why I missed this thread until now... as I watch Thing #2 gearing up to leave on Wednesday. He's going to Hakuba a few days early to get some Japow in. No insight on venues yet.

Thanks for all the props. I know he appreciates it.

I'll be waiving at y'all from the finish corral!

So stoked for this kid. He's a beast.

Word around Happo Village is that it might well go off tomorrow (Tuesday in JP, Monday where you are). Day before yesterday the conditions on the comp face were so bad - absolute boilerplate wind buff, slide for life no fall kinda stuff - FWT had the first ever on-venue inspections for the athletes. Snowed yesterday, more in the forecast over this week.

There hasn't been a non-AK North American tour stop for several years. I haven't seen an explanation for why Haines was dropped, but I have to imagine it was logistics-related. That one was really tough to pull off.

FWT said they were losing money on the venue and they needing/wanted more money than a small town like Haines can provide.

not to mention the expense and hassle factor of getting the infrastructure into the venue.....

(x-post) They sent the male athletes up starting at 5am. I got there around 6. Mile long skin track road into base of venue (athletes got sled-towed) then a 2 hour boot pack to top of venue in deep snow over ice crust. Women were at the base and never got sent up. Men waited at the top after the climb for 3 hours (as we did below) then got sent down due to lack of viz. Pounding snow here and no relief in sight. It will be interesting to see if they get the event off at all considering this storm is supposed to be something of a monster and the window is getting short.

Guys coming down said it was stupid deep but they were still hitting icy bottom.
