a hydro wheat mil transformed in a rope tow with detachable bars
the waterflow had to be manually controlled to equalize the speed depending how
many people are loaded

the first chair in BC was at red mtn in 47

I used to go to over to Trail BC fixn hardware back in the 80's, a couple of locals told me at least one of the lifts was built with parts " borrowed " from Comico and the local expertise from mining & milling

they told me everyone at Comico was in on it and the company turned a blind eye cuz it was good for community morale and everybody was a skier

Those old chairlifts at Red were bonkers. Seemed like they just placed the towers at either ridge over big bowls and strung it across. Never been so high off the ground on a chairlift and definitely not one so "bouncy".

In the mid 80's when you bought yer ticket the visa slip would say " red mtn ski society "yeah that chair was scary to ride, I remember a little pouch with a cord in it tied to the middle bar so the rider could pull up a rope, cuz it was SO high there was no way to get a rope up there

The guy I used to go over & help told me a woman in acounting was asking him about some paper work for parts, so he said I duno cuz I'm the IT contracter not Cominco and she said " oh yeah thats for the chair lift, I will deal with that don't worry "

The old Eagle double chair at Lake Louise was similar, not as bad maybe but if it was fully loaded and stopped between towers you were bouncing up and down forever. Was fun as a kid.

I commend the Sea2Sky for all they have done.
Although I trolled you all relentlessly,
about cables and winches and other engineering and meteorological miscellany,
the dudes that run THAT show
have been first rate in the face of adversity,
the cables people et al.
have really brought the Christmas cheer home.


So yes, good feels (au naturel),
and a resolution to embody that same Squamish Spirit
as life's challenges blow my way,
or your way,
or wherever powder flakes land.

I kinda like it.

Didn't seem that they had much for public relations out of the gate.
In fact, I'd say it all looked unplanned, dismissive, and from one person (manager) with a clear conclusion.

Nothing wrong with a clear conclusion ... but then you must show that the glove fits instead of saying
"trust me. just trust me." IMO - they really played this badly from a customer point of view.

They could have said,
"It is too early to comment until we have all the facts and information and a preliminary investigation is complete".
And left it at that.

A lot of news comments, conspiracy theories, even doubting qualified engineers comments,
were just a reaction to the predetermined conclusion,
however true it is/was, it stank of
mono-synaptic response.

If they had got it wrong, the damage to their reputation would have been a huge hurdle to future operations.

Gondola reopening on Valentine's Day (right in time for the holiday weekend). Drove by yesterday and they were doing test runs. Looked like only a few cabins on the rope, but otherwise everything looked good to go.

Are they still using the same torsion tube design that collided with the sheaves assembly when cars were swaying under high winds while operating "due to operator error"?

I wonder if that is why Blackcomb went with using the coil spring design on Crystal Ridge and the Blackcomb Gondola.

Insurance approval time for new purchases
Ordering the new haul rope (this needs to be manufactured upon request, and needs to be put in the production queue)
Ordering the new cabins (these need to be manufactured upon request, and needs to be put in the production queue)
Logistics of shipping a 120 tonne cable spool
Removal of the old cable
Receiving and unloading new cable
Positioning and pulling the new 120 tonne cable
Splicing the new 120 tonne cable
Shipping and unloading 30 gondola cabins
Stinging new gondola cabins
Testing new cabins and adjusting spacing of new cabins
Load testing new system
Scheduling inspections from government authorities.

Which one of these processes do think is a quick and easy job?
