I'm seriously sarcastic about how doomsday never comes. Funny how a free market economy adapts.

Oh, ok, just checking. I haven't been to Seattle, but, everything I read is that the restaurant doom never happened. Pure right wing scare tactics.

Some of the restaurants have added a fee to your bill to theoretically cover the increase in the wage. That’s about it. Decent restaurants are packed pretty much any night of the week.

Tom Douglas got sued and lost over that fee, pretty big restitution payout.

Seattle has few decent restaurants, they're all loud, raucous sports bars posing as restaurants, like RN47.

That’s kind of a generalization, but OK. Definitely a trend around S. Lake Union, for sure.

This and the food truck scene is pretty decent in my experience as well.

The city evicted the camp under i5/i90, threw a fence up. That was likely no easy feat... largest homeless camp in the city with one of the largest homeless populations...

If you don’t like the restaurant scene in Seattle you either don’t like food or don’t know where to go. Get out of amazonland, get off the Douglas / Stowell train, there is a tasty world out there...

    Yep.

And the few cities in the US with "better" aren't cities I'd want to live in.

I may disagree with you, but I feel no real need to insult you.

I do like food, there's a few people here who might back that up and maybe even fewer who might respect my view on the matter, but that's fine by me.

Dood... Tilth, Homer, Sitka & Spruce (pretty much my favorite restaurant anywhere, but sadly closing at the end of this year), Xi'an Noodle (ridic good and cheap. I'm often the only gweilo in there).

I'm pretty sure he knows of S&S Ted... I skied with Matt and his go to fungus forager years ago at Crystal when they were just starting out. Nice guy, good skier, great restaurant, hope Seattle's current issues aren't forcing him out.

That STimes article sure rings true of lots of the newer places downtown about the noise and "ambience"

d00d, Sitka and Spruce is loud and uncomfortable. Tilth is OK, but not the norm, which is loud. I like Nell's a lot, quiet, comfortable, great food. My opinion, not intended to insult.

I liked Chez Shea a lot back in the day as well as the Georgian Room. Places that were quiet and comfortable.

Portland generally blows Seattle away though for good restaurants.
The skiing is better around here though.

I liked the Willows Inn the times I've been, but not in Seattle

Altura is nice, especially during the truffle fest.

    Rovers bitd.

We're regulars from way back in the Eastlake days, but only know Matt from the restaurant. He told my wife that the change of ownership of the Melrose Market Building was the final nail. He said the sea scene is changing, but didn't get into the gruesome details.

    Also, RIP Poppy.

I agree with both of these statements. But be thankful that there are at least some. The Ham has only ever had one truly great restaurant: Nimbus. And it's long gone.

And I hear ya on the noise. As someone with a loud as fuck job, I appreciate the din being kept at a quiet roar.

I have to admit to being in B's camp here.
While I am not near the connoisseur that he (or others here) is, I do appreciate enjoying my limited outings with good company, part of which means being able to have a conversation at a reasonable volume.

    You guys are not wrong.

Current styles in restaurant interior design are not the quietest. Open ceilings, no table cloths, hard chairs, hard floors, open kitchens.

Just got back from getting called up to the mothership in seattle.
Ate at the Whale Wins my last night there. One of best dining experiences I've had in a while. But they have to educate you on min wage issue and they add a service fee since they had to raise all their prices. I came to eat and enjoy good food, wine and company, not get bummed out learning about your poorly paid kitchen staff.

Willows Inn, d00d. But shitfuck it's pricey now.

Been down in Portland a few times recently and found quiet at Paley's Place and even Little Bird wasn't bad noisewise with fanfuckingtastic food.

I get it that it's hard to have your city criticized, but your city is not you, the criticism is not about you and the city has it's faults, though it's not dead.

re: The Willows, yes it's great, but it's not in the city of subd00d excitement. The ferry only goes once per hour (on top of the 30 mins from town each way), adds $20 to the already very expensive evening, and I can walk from my house to anywhere downtown, so no worries about drinking. It's basically a special occasions only place.
