I've been getting these emails at work. We are supposed to report phishing and other suspicious emails so I did with the comment: I know this is fake because I put black tape on all my mobile cameras! One of the security guys saw me in the hall and said thanks for the laughs. I told him in a deadpan tone I was totally serious, paused uncomfortably long, then started laughing too. Good times.

Thanks DD, I got that e-mail too, assumed it was a scare tactic, and ignored it. My password for TGR was laughably insecure (if my account is stolen, I figure nothing of value would be lost), so I assumed they just guessed it. If they know your more secure password, maybe TGR really was compromised. Is this the only site where you use that particular password?

Edited to add: I took another look and the crappy password they included in the extortion e-mail was not the crappy password I use at TGR, so this is probably connected to a hack of a different site. The crappy password they included in the extortion e-mail was a throwaway I use on sites that I really truly bona fide 100% couldn't care less if my account is stolen, so no idea which particular site it came from.
