    Boat Porn!

Nice one. Hard to believe a couple barges like that dug that canal in the early 20th century. Wikipedia page reports the project had been considered since the early 17th century.

So is that guy handling wire rope with his bare hands?

Bucyrus-Erie was an American surface and underground mining equipment company. It was founded as Bucyrus Foundry and Manufacturing Company in Bucyrus, Ohio in 1880. Bucyrus moved its headquarters to South Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1893. In 1927, Bucyrus merged with the Erie Steam Shovel Company to form Bucyrus-Erie.

Renamed Bucyrus International, Inc. in 1997, it was purchased by Caterpillar Inc. in a US$7.6 billion[7] ($8.6 billion including net debt) transaction that closed on July 8, 2011. At the time of its acquisition, the Bucyrus product line included a range of material removal and material handling products used in both surface and underground mining.

Yeah, it's probably just something they had to rig up to get in/out across those gears and that turntable without dumping steam. They didn't give a shit about mantraps back then.
The one with Teddy is a little work hoe, but that big bastard dredge got on that spud barge via the rail, prob in pieces just small enough for 2 rail-mounted steam cranes.

Steam generates hella torque, which the operator can vary by "cut-off", or amount of time the steam is injected into the cylinders. But the higher the torque, the lower the efficiency and the more somebody had to shovel coal.

That same swell on the beam is sketch as fuck at 40. Any wind though, or real chop, you have to back that big plastic penis way down, but it still burns about as much fuel as a fucking Lockheed Constellation.

I didn't realize that was a Merritt's project. Looks like they're doing another one. It's hard to imagine being unhappy with work done by Merritt's.

I wonder how many times Roy Merritt said "I don't think I wanna do that" before Buffett finally wore him down.

You thinking of retiring on that? Live on that sucker all winter in the Caribbean. Wouldn't be my choice for a weekend family/day boat in the northeast.

LOL, At 50, it is burning about 1.1 gpm. At 70, it's about .7 gpm. My 24' jet boat does worse. I don't charge him for fuel and he doesn't ask for it from me.

It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

Ha! Forgot about that pic. My old neighbors AWSA regulation ski pond that he dug in his back yard. Had so many small bass in it that fishing wasn't fun.

Seems kinda okay from here, I like the Quartzite counters, although they could've picked stone with less iron streaks in it.
