Amazing that people manage to dig themselves into holes like this.

    Derek Johnson pleads guilty ..

    https://www.aspentimes.com/news/form...ars-in-prison/

Summary: He pleads to stealing $100k-1M. 4-12 yrs in the pokey. Has to pay back 250k (unsure why not the whole amount?). Sure seems like a great deal for him. He seems to be trying to downplay what he did.

Wife's case next appearance is dec16. Maybe she pays back the rest?

    Maybe because:

“A plea deal is about compromise,” she said. “Restitution is part of that compromise. The $250,000 is an amount the Johnsons can actually pay ASC over time and has no other relevance to the substantially higher amount stolen by the Johnsons.”

Does a bankruptcy get you out from paying court ordered restitution in Col.?

Not sure about bankruptcy. I'd hope it doesn't get you out of it?

Stealing 2.4 mil and only being liable for 10% seems like a screaming deal. Citing 'the amount they can actually pay' seems ... I dunno. How was that calculated I wonder.

If I was the victim of a money crime and the person got caught I'd want all my money back. Make it for the full amount, and let him chip away at it for the rest of his days.

Like I said, a great deal for him.

yeah, he is going to be in a world of hurt, and i would love to see him have to payback the full amount. But i guess there is probably no way he was going to be able to pay back that amount. I have known him since i moved to town and found him to be super arrogant. To think he was steeling while running for mayor and being on the city council. And all the toys he had, a $100k mastercraft, he lived in employee housing etc. Just bilked the ski co forever. How do you explain that to your kids.

And then there is this from the daily news, "he added that he looks forward to clarifying his motivations and intentions during his Jan. 21 sentencing hearing.
“I acquired some items without permission,""
    Doesn't seem remorseful.

Jezuz, blood from a stone and all that. He was delivering food at sentencing. He doesn't and never will have shit to his name.

Pics of wife necessary to assess her ability to repay.
In order to properly convert this thread to a polyasshat thread to more fully enrage the liberal left frequenting here...... (insert latest democratic blunder of your choice).

He's shown to be somewhat enterprising, so you never know. Any future successes can't be reflected in the amount he 'can actually pay' today - so why sell short?

Maybe there's a civil lawsuit coming?

Between this and the wife's pending deal, it'll be interesting to see where it all lands.

Sounds to me that it's jail time for a felony and bankruptcy in his fifties. Not an enterprising place to be in one's life.

She was a stealth bargaining chip.

    The wife pleads guilty.
Sounds like she avoids major time in the pokey.

Sentencing jan 21 and feb 18 respectively.

It’s insane they are allowed to settle for 10% restitution. I assume the Skico does not have any say in it either.

You should pay 100% for fraud, or pay it off making license plates.

Side business??? This is what they call it now. No wonder she is getting zero time.

Bump for judgment day tomorrow: https://www.aspentimes.com/news/aspen-skico-derek-johnsons-theft-in-selling-skis-was-methodical-unfathomable/

" the Johnsons stole nearly $6 million worth of goods and profited at least $2.4 million from the sale of these goods.

They did so with “an unlimited supply chain, zero acquisition costs and no proper taxes paid on a local, state or federal levels. … (The) sheer volume of skis alone is equivalent to stealing two pairs of skis per day, every day of every year for 12 consecutive years,” one Skico senior executive wrote to the judge.

By that accounting, the Johnsons stole at least 8,760 pairs of skis."
