no it was a guy named Radu the Romanian (aka in conversation as Ra don't ) an engineer in ontario who was always late but due to the like minded eclectic people who develop eclectic relationships my neighbor kept using him to sign off on engineering stuff ( Canopy walk ways in nigeria, sierra leon, metlakatla ... way out shit eh ) Radu went back to Romania and was still signing off on some shit for my bud so thats where he got this euro connection/idea for used lift gear but apparently the $$$$$ didnt add up

I did a few splices with "the Duke" 10 or so years ago. If I recall we had to take off all the chairs, detension the terminal, pick and drop the rope to where it could be cut and spliced, he'd tell stories while doing fancy shit and the yell at you to pull, do some weird shit with hammers, and then reverse the process and add a load test. But that was scheduled. The $100k cost is to cover his insurance cuz you really don't want to fuck that up.

I would talk to patrol and see if skinning will be allowed cuz its probably not gonna happen till summer.

I forget how many diameters long & don’t have the code book at hand. That’s when you’re glad you saved some stuff from the original splice so you have the right stuff to use. But lookin at the pic I think there might be damage to multiple strands that necessitates a new piece of rope and two splices...yuck...or a new rope.

As Bunion2020 implies, If they can find the right kinda rope, maybe. I never worked on a Riblet, but it's gonna be a lot of long days and evenings to prep for a splice. If I remember right it took us (8 mechanics +2 Cats/Catdrivers) 4 days to before it loaded public again. This entailed pulling 190 something double chairs off (Day 1). De-tensioning and moving the motor room forward while snowcats built a working platform to drop the rope onto (Day 2). Drop rope, let the Duke do his magic, put rope back on, move motor room back, while the snowcats clean out the platform (Day 3). Put chairs back on and load test(edit: I'm pretty sure we had to load test but cant remember everthing) Visible and Electromagnetic rope inspection by the Duke, rebuild bottom loading ramp (Day 4).

Bottom Line: It's gonna be a while.
