In learning the area we did a fair bit of climbing around

At the start of operations, despite being responsible for the whole thing I ended up having to get the head of ski school to guide and I drove the cat. I hadn't yet had chance to train anyone to a level I trusted with the Cat

The toughest job (physical) was breaking the trail from the highest pint I could get the cat to the top of the ski area. only a few dozen feet, but try that in chest to neck deep fresh on an unconsolidated base. The pic doesn't do it justice

Over the winter I did teach others to drive the Cat, but never to road build. If you can't figure out the basics to drive whatever machine someone has just thrown the keys to you on your own, it's going to take more than a few hours for me to teach you how to build roads let alone use a 12 way blade. It also gave me the excuse to never sit in the back.

    Many mornings looked like this

and some like this - after only one nights snow

Some parts of the area are densely wooded and you don't go so far as to get lost.

Snowboarding is fun, in these conditions

But when it gets deep I can't understand how anyone can think that it might work. Away from groomed terrain when you have a meter of fresh (3ft) on 3 meters (10ft) of unconsolidated. How do you move without a skier to make starting track and another skier to launch you. And when you fall over, unless its steep and you are very, very fit it's impossible to get up let alone start moving again.

In Japan or elsewhere if it's really deep and you wanna go surf style take 2 boards

Well played with the slow roll as well, during fall, getting us all hyped.

This thread helped seal the deal, motivated me to book a trip. I'll be on Honshu for a week in February solo, would be really stoked to hook up with mags.

NONE!, yes I drove one 100m in 1992 on dirt with a Swiss German shouting at me. But not what I'd call a lot of seat time in a cat. I have driven other equipment and I am reasonably mechanically minded (I have build a few cars)
I am an IML (International Mountain Leader) and I've done AMGA ski guide course and a bunch of Avie and Medical certs.

Why is Mat important, Mat was just a 1st year ski/snowboard instructor with the nearby Naeba ski school who had injured himself, but unlike the average 1st year who was 19 and clueless, Mat was 27 and a Physicist.

So I could teach him to drive this
