Are you still using the original (crude) mercury switch thermostat? You really need to swap in a digital thermostat -- $15-20 and a few minutes work, and the furnace will work a lot better (more accurate temp holding).

El Chup, what digital thermostat model did you use out of curiosity? None of the RV shops around my neck of the woods carry anything and most people I talk to provide confusing information about what will work and what wont (ie most thermostats apparently run off 24v whereas my camper battery is a 12v)

I'm oblivious when it comes to this stuff, so would be curious to know what digital thermostats are being used out there by those who've done the conversion....

I bought a RV thermostat at Camper World in Feb.2011 and it was bi-metal not mercury and no digital available.

I used a cheap one from Walmart. Regular home thermostat, AA battery powered, furnace only. (I don't have A/C in my camper.) I don't remember the manufacturer, but Google search for "Walmart rv thermostat" and you'll find all the info you need. It's about $15-20.

The one I got doesn't have programmable on/off time and date, just a simple setting for the temp you want, and an on/off switch. It has vertical doors on the sides, one hides the batteries, and I can't remember what's behind the other door.

I'm out of the country right now, or I'd go out to the camper and look for you.

Thanks guys - had some time on my hands yesterday so I just ended up buying a Honeywell 'low voltage' thermostat at the Home Depot around here and figured for the low cost I'd give it a go....sure enough, it works like a charm. It may not be perfect, but it does the trick and will be better than the old merc setup....no idea why so many people I asked had conflicting views and often said the home thermostats wouldnt work...guess in the end, its always worth a try!

Because most people talk out of their asses with no idea really WTF they're talking about! We have a FWC that I'm planning on throwing a digital thermostat into in the next couple of weeks. Look forward to the improved efficiency and reporting back.

My 1984 Westy is pretty cool, but I'd like to have one of these.



The sand rails provide a nice effect. It was pretty big. That's our red 1991 Land Cruiser getting dwarfed in the back.

Funny, I saw where you cross-posted this from Expo. Probably the only thing to add would be a ladder up the back and a rocket box next to the AC up top for ski storage. A great rig.
