    cool homes

I'm an architecture/ design enthusiast (super neophyte)
but came across this neat Frank Lloyd Wright that I had not seen prior. he's usually so right-angular-ish

in reference to one of my first design projects in school, my prof said, "Well, acinpdx, everyone has to design a circular house once. At least you got yours out of the way."

I dig houses, but I'm not a particularly artistic-minded type, so I don't figure my opinpoin amounts to a whole bunch, but it seems like the magazines and the websites are chock full of the same boring square boxes. It's as if architects and builders learned how to span about 32 feet or so with a mostly flat roof, and everything became an exercise in how to stack boxes, make as many walls as possible out of glass, and minimize everything else.

You should subscribe to Dwell magazine. Lots of fluff, but some pretty cool stuff too.

Or check out Leibal's architecture page. They specialize in minimalist designs, mostly Japanese; they profile a new home every couple of days.

I dig the old barn look. I'd like to build out something like this, with more glass.

I love unique homes that embrace the site and bring nature in:
Charles Haertling did a great job designing this house in Boulder. The rock outcrop acts as the 4th wall to the house:

Rick Joy has some great designs for AZ homes:

Second fun fact. The McCallister home sold a few years back for a surprisingly reasonable number. Always loved that house.

I'm also a sucker for any of those shows- "amazing homes" or whatever zillion variations there are

I went through the house renovation thread and got hooked on Houzz. Mostly interiors, but some articles on full builds that are pretty cool

Cam's house, too. It was on the market for a looong time. Not familiar with the area but it was kind of out of the way per the articles I read.

His aspen leaf house has been one of my favorites. Here's more of his.

More often than not architects and designers are on too short of a leash to be able to let their imaginations 'go for it'. Many should be, others should be allowed to fly.

Also, just because a 'house' looks cool doesn't necessarily mean it functions well as a home.

The permanence of old stone is really impressive and I gravitate to old homes in general but a lot of contemporary designs are neat. I'd say a mashup between the two would suck if proposed but thought this one was well done. Article.

    ^wait where do you live?
bc I love love old homes and one weird thing about living in the west is that the homes are way more "new"
my grandparents home in VT that they lived in was built in the 1800's?!
there are some more random homesteads in the west that are old cabins but not the same as new england where sh*t is oooollldd

This is my old 1880’s Victorian in Aspen.

Now it’s owned by the owner of Quicken Loans and the Cleveland Cavaliers. They put a fricken basketball court in the basement.
