It's so hard to come by
    That feeling of peace
    This friend of mine said
    Close your eyes
And try a few of these
I thought I was flying like a bird
    So far above my sorrow
    When I looked down
I was standing on my knees
Now I need someone to help me
    Someone to help me please

    Baby if you need me
Like I know I need you
    There's just one thing
    I'll ask you to do
Take my hand and lead me
To the hole in your garden wall
    And pull me through
    Pull me through
When you see something that is not right, not just, not fair, you have a moral obligation to say something. To do something." Rep. John Lewis

    I had a lover
    I don't think I'll risk another
    These days, these days
And if I seem to be afraid
To live the life that I have made in song
It's just that I've been losing so long
    I've stopped my dreaming
I won't do too much scheming
    These days, these days
These days I sit on corner stones
And count the time in quarter tones to ten
Please don't confront me with my failures
    I had not forgotten them

One of my favorites but yanno..... that's a Jackson Browne song (though she recorded it first). He wrote that song at 16. Such an old soul............

This one is about 500 years old, the themes of love, jealousy, privilege, rage are immemorial. It went to the US and Canada with migrations of folks and many versions exist, it then came back again, it had pretty much died out in the U.K. except for in Scotland. The story of the singer pretty tragic too, lovely voice and guitar.

Any minute now, my ship is coming in
    I'll keep checking the horizon
I'll stand on the bow, feel the waves come crashing
Come crashing down down down, on me

And you say, be still my love
    Open up your heart
    Let the light shine in
    But don't you understand
    I already have a plan
I'm waiting for my real life to begin

When I awoke today, suddenly nothing happened
But in my dreams, I slew the dragon
And down this beaten path, up this cobbled lane
I'm walking in my old footsteps, once again

And you say, just be here now
Forget about the past, your mask is wearing thin
Just let me throw one more dice
I know that I can win
I'm waiting for my real life to begin

Any minute now, my ship is coming in
    I'll keep checking the horizon
And I'll check my machine, there's sure to be that call
It's gonna happen soon, soon, oh so very soon
It's just that times are lean

And you say, be still my love
Open up your heart, let the light shine in
    Don't you understand
    I already have a plan
I'm waiting for my real life to begin

On a clear day I can see, see for a long way
On a clear day I can see, see for a long way
When you see something that is not right, not just, not fair, you have a moral obligation to say something. To do something." Rep. John Lewis

No surprise, but Wes Anderson used that one beautifully.

Speaking of Wes. The man has a real knack for putting beautifully sad songs with powerful scenes.

I still call it The Jake.

Seven pages and nobody's posted Marie.

And a lot of these Townes songs were covered brilliantly by Steve Earle - I don't know which versions I like better.

Townes is in the thread (I posted him on the first page), there's so many of his that belong here.

It's probably already posted but the all time classic is of course I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry. The PBS show from the ryman the other night was great. Looking forward to the Ken burns series, even though it will probably be full of self important inanities from shelby Foote wannabes.

By the time I get to Phoenix, she'll be rising
And she'll find that note that I left hanging on the door
And she'll laugh when she reads the part
    That says: "I'm leaving"
'Cause I've left that girl so many times before
And by the time I get to Albuquerque, she'll be working
And she'll take off time just to give me a call
And she'll hear that phone keep right on ringing and ringing
On the wall, yeah oh, that's all
And by the time I make Oklahoma, she'll be sleeping
She'll turn softly in her sleep and call my name out low
And then she'll cry just to think that I'd really leave her, I left her
But time after time after time I tried to tell her so
But she just didn't know that I would really go
    That I would really go

One of the most haunting songs I know.

"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. We must never, ever be boring."
