I imagine its that way for most businesses....from paper pushing to manufacturing. This is my opinion.

NEW YORK—Sending a clear message that taking advantage of company time would not be tolerated, human resources officer Abigail Styner warned employees Tuesday against taking unsanctioned 8-hour naps every night while working from home. “We try to give our employees a lot of leeway in terms of how they structure their days, but taking six- to eight-hour naps every day is unacceptable,” said Styner, explaining that some workers were found to be unreachable for long periods of time, usually between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. the next day. “We completely understand if someone is sick and needs to take a 15-minute break, but an entire third of the day is abusing our company policy. It’s important that our employees establish a healthy work–life balance, but it shouldn’t have a negative impact on productivity.” At press time, Styner was sending out a firm warning about the inappropriateness of at-home employees having sex in their place of work.

I worked remotely for a publicly traded company for 4 years running the distribution division ($160MM in Rev for division) with 7 warehouses all over the US, 28 subordinates spread across those locations and then did all the accounting and financial reporting for the division.

I was generally always available and outside of the first week of each month or when traveling to mother ship each quarter...my role mostly consisted of “managing” my team. Making decisions, approving expenditures, building management reports for the board of directors, analyzing data, etc.

Basically, if my division was making their numbers (which we always did), my deliverables were timely for month/quarter/year end and I was available to answer questions from our VPs...no one cared when or how much I worked. Call in to the meetings you need to be in, etc. and the rest is flexible.

I now work for a firm and again, as long as my clients are happy and I don’t miss timelines...I can have as much freedom as I want. The thing is, for a CPA, you can’t fuck off for long before people notice. You have to deliver and that takes time. The great thing though...my boss skis a lot and doesn’t care when I do the work as long as it’s done and clients are happy.

I work late or get up early and work enough that I can pick one morning or afternoon each week to go ski based on when the best storms come through. A really good week of snow, you make it happen to get out two or three times.

To say that everyone the works from home just fucks off is BS. Some of us are actual adults with many years of experience and frankly...are better at our jobs then most everyone else so we get the rope. Then...when we have the rope, we still are top performers and then get more rope. Before you know it...you have a great gig with lots of flexibility and you have learned how to manage expectations thru response and delivery times so you don’t get 80 hours of work dumped on you every week.

Alternatively...you work your ass off the first decade of your career, save enough to not always be stretched thin and you start your own gig working 30 hours a week but still making good money...and you stay steady the rest of your life. Never rich, but never poor (money wise) and rich with experiences. Balance in all things and in all seasons of the year.

Skiing and fishing during the week when the slopes and river are empty is a beautiful thing and good for the soul, but so is getting out on Saturday’s with your family or friends.

    I sell hotel rooms.
Those conferences you used to go to prepandemic for your job or hobby? I get the organizers to put them in my hotels.

On a VERY related note what do you remote workers do with the neighbors, or neighbors landscapers that fire up the blowers for hours on end. I have calls, video and otherwise i need to do and just be able to think.

I am going to lose it on one of these noisy fuckers soon.

Don't forget the sirens. I try to make a joke about it if unmuted but they are fucking annoying.

Sirens are better here than when I was working in Manhattan, and sirens cant be done during non work hours. Sirens are, by their nature, emergencies.

Why these fuckers have to blow their lawns in prime work hours is beyond me.,

Obviously the noise cancelling headphones and microphones on the higher end conferencing headsets is going to help. Close the windows and doors helps just slightly also. Then you can also head over to the tech talk and follow this thread here for an office area at home: https://www.tetongravity.com/forums/...-proofing-wall

My office is down the street from the fire station, sirens have been much less of an issue at home.

You folks think of remote as work from home, I think of remote work as remote to head office, branch office, all managers

i can only think of very small % of a career where the amount of work was correct, the rest or the time there was way too much or way too little work

Joy Behar told The View that disgraced journalist Jeffrey Toobin 'isn't a bad person' for being caught masturbating on a work Zoom call - but then lashed CNN for making a female host do his comeback interview.

Behar said Monday: '(Toobin) said that he wants to be a better person. He’s working at a food bank.
I don’t see the correlation between needing to engage Mr. Happy and being a bad person,' in an apparent reference to the writer's penis.

'I mean, maybe it causes blindness, but I don’t see how it causes you to be a bad person,' she continued, saying that had it not been for the webcam, Toobin would have been perfectly entitled to 'do what he was doing at home alone in their house.'
    . . .

CNN really fucked up by not firing this guy. Can you imagine any other job in the world (except porn & TGR admin) where you get caught jerking off and keep your job?

I used to port game samples and frameworks from WinOSes to linux, lots of low level graphics, network, file system gobbldeegook.

I didn't really need to go to meetings except to update management on progress and schedules so did 2 to 4 hour long zoom calls per week. Most of the work was solo on a laptop with occasional downloads and remote dump traces to analyze.

I wouldn’t want to lose a productive employee over an accidental wank session if I could help it.

He that has worked from home for a year and not wanked it at his desk among you, let him first cast a stone.
