That thar job board doesn't get much traffic eh? (Tahoe/Reno folks, jobs?)

So I'm looking for a job in the reno/tahoe/mammoth area, really anything interesting that leaves me a modest amount of time for skiing will do.

    My Education:
    Masters of arts in teaching
    B.S. In environmental science....

    My skills:
-Good at all things ski sales related. I'm a decent (though not certified yet) bootfitter (helps that I have super weird feet). Can do all backshop tasks too.
-Can wrench bikes, talk bikes, sell bikes.
-I'm a pretty decent science and math teacher.
-I have worked extensively doing scientific studies in the field (like in the middle of nowhere) here in Alaska.
-With a couple of days of getting back to speed on the software (I'm sure it's updated) I can do pretty good work as a GIS analyst.

I have a restricted time frame, as I am under contract at a school until thanksgiving, then have to get back to AK in May to get my boat ready for the salmon season. To make this work I need to make $20/hr at least, as I make $25-$30 here. I mean I have a masters degree and am halfway through a second.

Really just need to get out of this state for a bit and reset my bearings. I love it here but it's getting stale and I'm unattached completely, and have never left the state for more than a month. Just need a job to make it all work. If anyone has any leads let me know!

    Thanks
    Patrick

$20 an hour for what is essentially a seasonal job in the Tahoe area?
    Good luck, my man.

You need to be at least a Level 2, preferably Level 3 certified ski/snowboard instructor to make at least $20 an hour at the larger ski hills.

Subway in Truckee is hiring for $15 an hour.

I'm gonna say "Good Luck" getting anywhere near $20 an hour as a boot-fitter or working in a shop (but don't fully quote me on that as I have no idea what a shop person makes, but I'm pretty sure it ain't $20 an hour).

The Post Office is only paying $17 an hour.

Not sure about the Agriculture Check Point's hourly wage.

Waiting tables at one of the high-end restaurants won't get you the $20 an hour, but the tips might, if you can score a waiting gig.

With your Thanksgiving to May window, you're out of luck in terms of scoring a teaching gig as most of the schools in Tahoe and Reno are already back in session.

Maybe a gig at one of the casinos...but I have no idea what a dealer makes and you'd probably need experience.

Sorry to paint a grim picture for you, man, but I cannot think of a single part-time and/or winter seasonal job that will pay you $20 an hour starting wages. Anything that will get you that much they'll most likely want a larger commitment than 6 months.

    That said:

Check the Job Boards at the ski hills (Northstar, Squaw, Mammoth, Heavenly, Kirkwood); the Reno/News & Review might have a job board on their site; the local papers (Sierra Sun, etc) might have stuff posted, too.

I honestly think that your time frame of Thanksgiving to May is gonna limit what you can score that will get you at least $20 an hour, that's all.

Googled "$20 an hour jobs in Tahoe" and got this:
    http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=$20+an+hour+jobs+in+ tahoe&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

Not sure if any of those links are worth clicking, but it's a start? Could Google the same thing for Reno/Sparks/Carson City/Mammoth.

The only people I know actively using their degrees and making more than $20 an hour work full time in Reno and ski on the weekends. Or they are full-time in some other job around the Lake (Forest Service, teaching, Real Estate, nurses, etc.) All my other friends with multiple degrees do seasonal work for minimum wage and get by.

Shop people generally make a reasonable wage in that $20 range especially if they are bootfitters, and/or the shop has a commission program. $12/hr with a decent commission would work just fine.

Major Shops in the area to check then would be:

    Truckee:
    Start Haus
    Granite Chief
    Sports Hub
    Blue Zone
    True North (Northstar/Vail)

    Squaw:
    Elite Feet
    Parallel
    Surefoot

    Tahoe City:
    Any Mountain

    Incline Village
    Village Ski Loft

    Reno:
    Bobo's

    South Lake Tahoe:
    Sports LTD
    Heavenly Sports (Heavenly/Vail)

    Mammoth:
    Footloose
    Mammoth Mountaineering
    Kittridge
    there are others

You aren't gonna make $20+ an hour as a shop rat unless you are a really good (certified) mechanic, have been around for a decade, or are indispensable.

I'll ask some teacher friends about job opportunities, with your time restrictions in mind.

Reno and surrounding areas have quite a few warehouses. My impression is that they pay OK (don't know about $20/hr though) and you can get shifts that will accommodate ski time.

What are the grocery stores paying these days? They always seem to be hiring and short staffed. Main qualification for any job around here seems to be having a place to live.

Patagonia is always looking for folks to work in their warehouse (West Reno) and the outlet (downtown). As Chup said, they tend to have flexible hours.

As OG stated, the local supermarkets are always hiring. Heck they bus folks up from Reno to work at the SaveMart in Truckee!

Not sure what they pay (if they pay), but given your teaching creds, SOS, Girls/Boys Club are always looking for folks to work during the winter season.

I hope my initial post wasn't too dickish. It's just that your bottomline of $20 an hour for a seasonal job is rather inflated for the area. That's the reason so many places have "Help Wanted" signs. They don't pay enough for somebody to live here (i.e. in Truckee/Incline/Tahoe City). Places up here are always short-handed because there is little-to-no-affordable housing.
And with what folks get paid for basic (i.e. restaurant/supermarket/ski shop/etc.) jobs, it's more worth it for them to live in Reno and work in Reno for the same wages and not have to f$%k with driving I-80 in the winter.

Again, not wishing to harsh your mellow, but also want to paint a somewhat realistic picture of the "temporary" job market.

There's community colleges in both Lake Tahoe and Mammoth (Reno or Carson City maybe too?). Looks like LTCC is quarter system. Mammoth is semester so you'd be on the hook through mid-May. Unsure what qualifications they require, but seems like you're close. Heck, UNR might take you if they have a hole to fill.

Sacramento and its burbs are also moderately close to the mountains. Roseville is an hour to Sugar Bowl. Rancho Cordova or Folsom to Kirkwood may not be too bad either. No snow to shovel in the valley either.
10/01/2012 Site was upgraded to 300 baud.

FYI, high school tutors are getting outrageous high hourly rates. If you could get in the loop at a few private schools or at public schools in the “nice” part of town, one or two a day would keep you in beer.

You got an EMT 1--or can you get one in the fall? If so ski patrol? They might be up to 20 bucks an hour by now. Or not.

Pm me. My company hires teachers on a contract basis to do enrichment workshops in public schools.

Also you could move to Reno and work at any number of menial jobs and earn $20 an hour. I work for a very reputable employer and I can’t hire anyone under $17 and at that rate good luck on passing a drug screen or background check. Definitely an employee’s job market at the moment in Reno

Also amazon hires tons of short time labor for the holiday rush. So does patagucci. You can also get hours that let you ski

You don't do AK year round?!
