Here’s some tips to help minimize the chance of getting mixed up with this problem:
1) Watch for “hot spots”: Check avalanche forecasts, get local information, and keep an eye out for big, deep avalanches.
2) If large deep slides are happening, even if isolated or sporadic, get as much information as possible about:a) Terrain: aspect, elevation, incline, terrain feature, etc.
b) Snowpack: windloaded, shallow, variable depth, wet, etc.
c) Trigger: cornice fall, a step down avalanche, a sledder, a skier, sun hitting the slope in the morning?
d) Weather: snowfall, wind, temperatures (especially raid rise or fall), solar radiation, etc.
3) Plan your trip to avoid places, times, or situations where you might encounter the kind of terrain, snowpack,
triggering mechanism, or weather associated with recent deep slab activity.

"[Feb 15, Glacier NP] Fracture line: 600 to 700 metres long and approximately 8 metres deep. Failure plane likely storm triggered a large soft wind slab, which stepped down to November basal facets. Most of avalanche ran on ground. Ran for approximately 3000 metres distance and 1350 vertical metres. Debris 500 metres long in lower gully and then 1000 metres down canyon. Widest estimated measurement of avalanche debris 200 metres, depth of debris approximately 25 to 30 metres. Took out approximately 20 hectares of forest."

Dayum! I can't even imagine what that kind of carnage looks like.

Not to be a downer, but does anyone know what happened on or near Blackcomb glacier yesterday morning? Got a first hand report of - if I am not garbling things up - patrol apparently doing compressions on someone who may, or may not, have already been sledded off a nearby pitch onto the glacier proper and med-evac heli circling.

Sounded like there was a pretty big crowd of rubber-neckers. I'm a bit surprised not to have seen any info here (esp if conditions related) or in the media. Hopefully all is well...

So where did people find good snow today?
Went sled skiing and the winds were howling like I've never seen them.
Yesterday's perfection changed into today's wind f**ked.

Cakehole was really good up top but you could see the wind starting to affect the surface, didn't affect skiing really, stilll blower up top. But then maybe below 1800m the snow got sun affected and you were looking for shady spots to avoid that crust. It lasted a far ways down into the denser trees. I'd wait until the next snow to repeat this. So many people down there, the exit was quite firm from the traffic.

The wind did frig up lots of stuff. I didn't see that much today because I was out enjoying my wife's company and taking some pics. Poopchutes looked like they would still have been awesome.

Anyhoo in other news I ran into three people with headlamps rolling into whistler at about 6:30. I promptly offered them a drink from my flask (Fireball this time, not Jager) which they took. 3 for 3. They were coming back from Cowboy Ridge which they said was good.

I'm sure there were plenty of spots that the wind didn't get to but it'd be super barrell-icious to hear from some others. :-)

I do not miss mill counts from living in PG. Friday was great, Saturday had a lazy day on backside of Flute and Oboe, was surprised to see zero natural activity, wish we had gone out to something steeper but had great quality snow. Crowds and traffic were comically bad, Lion's Gate was backed up onto the highway as was 2nd narrows. Hopefully it's sunny/decent vis tomorrow.

From what he heard some old guy just stopped, keeled over(heart attack?), and died.

They actually stopped the Showcase tbar cause of this. We were on our way out to Husume and were surprised to not see a big posse of our buddies behind us on the bootpack. Heard a chopper circling too once we were down Don't Swill. It all made sense when we got down Husume and saw the legion of patrollers around a guy on the ground and the helo coming in for a medevac. I was told it was a heart attack...
