Saturday at the mountain that shall remain unnamed. Storm skiing with my kids is my happy place. My 7 year old is getting his first tastes of skiing pow with the big kids. My 10 year old jumps off of everything he can find. We lapped until they kicked us out.
When did they kick you out? i've seen them shut down at noon when it gets wet to the top. assuming thats what i'm assuming

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD), the City of South Lake Tahoe, and officials at Heavenly worked together over the summer to create a plan that would hopefully eliminate the problems of last winter.

The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.
I just don't get it. Utah has had a highly functional bus system in LCC for decades. This is not that hard.
You need to build a few large parking lots just off 80 in the north and the 50/89 junction in the south. Then buy some buses.
You are talking about a few tens of millions of upfront capital costs and it would almost certainly MAKE MONEY on an operating basis if run right (maybe 10-15 PCT ROIC?). Even if you ran it subsidized for zero profit, it's just not that expensive.
No need to build rail or anything else crazy here. Just reduce traffic, pollution, and churn.
No gnar was harmed in the writing of this post...
People are great at spending other people's money.
One of the big issues in Truckee and North Lake Tahoe is there are not enough CDL bus drivers. Why would someone work at-will in a weather dependent, seasonal business when they can have the relative security of a government job? TART doesn't have enough drivers.
Where are they going to build these few large parking lots in Truckee?
Let it snow.
I heard second-hand (supposedly a FB post?) Heavenly was running shuttles over the holiday weekend from the community college to the Cali base when parking filled up there. I guess that was a one off?
PT and Heavenly are two different cups of tea, but they're both at the ends of long run-ins, and more shuttles would be a good thing.

because I was curious. check this out

literally $2000 signing bonus, an additional $1000/mo bonus for working in tahoe over your base $23+/hour and they still can't fill all the openings.
everyone likes to think all this stuff is easily solved, but the sheer fact it hasn't been since literally the 80s proves it's nowhere near as simple as people like to make it out to be.
there are so many stakeholders, agencies and even counties involved all with different sets of goals and incentives.
My guess is that all mass-transit options are to get other people and their equipment out of their vehicles. What's going to get you or me out of our vehicles ?
That pict is actually fairly kind. You are missing the one of the upper road that had dirt above KT with a million jerry's.
Yup, pretty frustrating weekend. When you are annoyed, just be glad you didn't drive from So.Cal. for this race. By the boys 2nd run on Saturday it was a bobsled course w/ holes galore. Congrats to Jnr. Janky for finishing as that was not easy! 5 of the top 10 from the first run crashed. This wasn't just missed gates, but blew up. My son was 6th after first run and fired up. Didn't even make the road in run 2. Pretty bummed. I too took exactly 2 runs all day to shuttle jackets and crap from the top of the course to the bottom.
Yesterday we got 4th chair on Siberia for some epic braille mashed potatoes. Took 3 runs and decided wildflour cookies and getting home early sounded better. Was missing our 2k extra in elevation as my daughters had a blast at Mammoth on Sunday.
Good luck Tahoe peeps. See ya in 2 weeks for U14's. I hope it cools off before then.
He who has the most fun wins!
If it was reliable and frequent I’d prefer to take the bus all the time. Love the bus system in park city, for example (obviously still take the rental car around when skiing LLC / BCC but have also ditched the rental car at the base and taken the bus up the canyons as well).
Tahoe / Truckee locals and visitors alike have been gaslit into this idea that it’s impossible and not financially viable. It’s total bullshit. Not saying it would be easy but people act like it’s going to Mars or something.

New excuse blog. No Headwall, no Sherwood (now I know why they weren't running TLC to the top, so you couldn't see how much snow was back there!).
Maybe we will just have to settle for hookers and blow.
Headed to Utah where they are running 21 of 21 lifts.
^^^This. It seems like there is a collective action problem with public transit. Resort wants government to pay for it and vice versa. Personally I think the resorts should pay for it but it’s cheaper for them to pay off the politicians. Used to live in Placer county and it’s not like you need a ton of $$$ to peddle some influence.
can’t say I am a fan of the shuttle, maybe I have been gaslit(?) but the most reliable shuttle I can think of is at northstar. I am not a north shore skier but the few times I have gone to northstar it’s a junk show. Park out at castle peak, walk to the pick up, shuttle to the village, 1/2 mile walk through the village, gondola ride and 45 minutes later your on snow. I remember one weekend around 2008 northstar was parking folks at the truckee airport and bussing them in.
anyone used lake link to get to the mountain? I have seen them running around the south shore a bit. I wonder what the wait times are.

Mashed potatoes today--that is, my mom's leftover mashed potatoes that weren't that good to begin with, left in the fridge overnight and eaten cold for breakfast. (Actually, the snow wasn't that bad but us old folks don't do well in the fog.)
As far as getting stuff open--they can't even plow the parking lot at AM.
