Hard to disappear with cameras everywhere you go. All the guy needed was a wig and a mask and he could have gone anywhere.

I had both of these exact thoughts. Going to the reserve was a ruse, and you could disappear into a homeless camp for a good long time. Not much of a life, but better than prison I suppose.

I am out of touch, but I think the Marshalls JCAT and vice/drug outfits often have pretty good reach into the homeless world. Boundless opportunities for paid CIs. It’s also a blind spot for normal folks because we tend toward purposefully not staring at or getting to know the downtrodden, but they totally watch each other, because their belongings are unguarded, because they’re vulnerable to each other safety-wise, and because maybe there’s an opportunity for drugs or money or whatever. So we tend to just see nondescript individuals or huddles of them, but those who are out on that circuit are primed to notice when somebody new is around. And the last thing they want lurking around where they sleep is some desperate murderer on the lam…

    A related aside:
Non-local detective-y suits came by the bus station once looking for a hometown guy who was my age in school, same uncommon first name, same first two letters of his last name. Same age, almost the same name. It was an interesting several minutes.

It was sorta a joke since apparently a 5 yr old can do it.

I met a middle-aged semi-retired teacher who spends the summers in her Transit Connect. She's small and it's a pretty sweet setup that she has dialed in. It can work. For a small single person. Her GOTOS game is a bicycle on the back, and a kayak and a stowed ez-up on top.

Our kid's piano teacher got herself a Nissan 200 conversion van. Slick little setup. Fits in a regular sized garage.

Here’s what bothers me about this whole thing:

Hundreds of indigenous women and girls have gone missing in Wyoming and you never hear a single thing.

One blonde Instagram vanlifer goes missing and murdered and the whole world pays attention. ONE

Here's a report from the National Indigenous Women's Resource Center on the State of Missing and Murdered People in Wyoming. Gonna guess the situation is very similar on most other reservation lands.

According to this article, between 2011-2020, 710 indigenous people went missing in Wyoming…..WTF.

Cant remember where I read the article… I think it was NYT but I can’t find it… maybe NPR

White women are the ‘most dead’
Black men are the ‘least dead’

With respect to how the community reacts.

    It’s a very true thing…. And it’s a very suck thing too.

Native Americans aren't exactly well represented or acknowledged by the media in general. Almost a third of households in the Navajo Nation don't have running water. Pretending these people don't exist is just SOP in America.

No shit, Captain Obvious. I just find it slightly troubling that an average of 80 people a year go poof in the state of Wyoming, and receive zero media coverage because, Indians….. That is fucked.

None were white, blonde, or pretty enough, and didn't #vanlife so I mean do they even matter?

Sorry Gabby is not "news", she's a statistic.
